Hi May have a white Christmas this year , snowing down to the foothills tonight, but strong winds so may blow out the system.

Be safe and may all your hikes be down hill and always look forward to a great 2015.
We have the Hero's Hike and one to the Grand Canyon also working on the NRT from Lone Pine campground into town with Dave Kirk and the BLM so this year we may get to hike this as the final link from the 1904 trail to the Summit!

Thanks everyone for the help this year on many projects that now are near finished or soon will be.

The Portal Crew

Hi Sad to say the wind is only about 20 today , Makes one miss Kansas.

Ridge line was showing long tails yesterday , and the light dusting we had the other night has cleared in the south facing areas, up to the 7500' level around here.

Guide group went up to the notch early this week but high winds and fresh snow turned them back at the 14,000' level

According to their De Lorme broadcast, Sonya and Daniel (deaf climbers) just summitted via the main trail (well, sort of the main trail...snow shortcuts up chutes in places). They set out Saturday and encountered very brutal conditions. Looks like they hung out at Trail Camp a few days before they got their weather window. They set out from Trail Camp yesterday and looks like they spent last night just shy of the summit on the back ridge (just after windows?), and summited just a few moments ago today. Congrats team, and safe journey back!

Hi Doug. I just wanted to say hi and wish you and Earlene and Doug a great 2015. It's been a few years since I was up the mountain. Nowadays I spend more time up the creek yuk yuk. But your family is so valuable to everyone who is associated with Mt. Whitney I hope you all get a nice warm fuzzy feeling knowing that all year. The last time I saw you was at A 16 in my town of Costa Mesa many years ago. Thanks Adios, Rich.

Hi Rich we are all doing well since the Costa Mesa show been to some County Fairs and some hog callings.Built several houses and I think the Hostel.
Jack and Betsy are doing the Whitney talks now with Kurt Wedberg also doing his . Ken Murray is doing several a year. Some years the Forest Rangers off the trail we do talks at REI.

Do some Non Profit work which I think everyone should see if it fits into your mix . Some of the best days when things all work and at the other end when you see that it's threading water .

Had thoughts about retiring but was just short of 30 years and would feel like a quitter!

Thanks for checking in. Doug

Thanks for the advance notice of the 60 Minutes segment on the Hero's Project last night (Jan 11).

We watched and found it inspirational. Good luck to those on the Hero's Hike April 12 on Mt Baldy and to all Vets hiking on Mt Whitney in 2015.

Happy New Year.

Jim

Well, how was it?

I think I'll do the Heroes hike. I tried to say so in the relevant thread, but it won't let me.

I think you should, and you could get Tim's autograph, or mine.

I'll bring a pen.

I'll also make a list of other peaks to climb while I'm in the area. Say, have you noticed that California has a lot of mountains?

Hi We always do the Matterhorn out here and I have heard about other famous climbs , Montana de Loma or Signal Hill which brought Earlene's family out to climb about 1920 then decided to just help build drilling rigs to outline the skyline. The rigs are now nicely landscaped Islands just offshore for a nightscape.

Didn't know that about Earlene's family. I need to hear more, considering part of my family ended up scaling a lot of those same spines that made up the porcupine that was Signal Hill in those days, too. (Too bad The Pike isn't around any more---the best cure for acrophobia was riding that coaster over the ocean...)
