Help,

I have all my permits and will be hiking from Onion Valley to Mt. Whitney just after the 4th of july. I would like to spend 1 night at Onion Valley trail head campground. All of the sites have been reserved, are there any back packers sites there , where should I stay? I hope someone can help.

You might also check out Grays Meadow Campground, which is on the road to OV (6000').

I had thought OV saved some sites for walkins, but I am not able to confirm that on the internet. YOu may want to check with Inyo NF. Or you could change your permit and camp off the trail at one of the lakes on the way to Kearsarge Pass.

P.S. I just checked. Grays has one site for 7/5, and then a bunch of sites for 7/6.

P.S.S. It looks like OV only allows reservations for 16 of the 30 sites. But I'd still confirm with Inyo NF.

Akichow,

Thank you for the help, I did not know about the campground at 6000 ft, that will work for me. I will be taking 3 rookies to the top of Mt. Whitney for there first summit.

I just moved from Stockton to Fresno 2 weeks ago and I sure do miss my weekly trips up Mt. Diablo. It looks like Kings Canyon will become my new hiking home. Do you hike Mt. Diablo very often? I see you like to climb Mt Dana for your training hikes, it is one of my favorite hikes.

Mt. Diablo is spectacular! Particularly in Spring. Too hot now...

If you are coming from Fresno, why not stay at Horseshoe Meadow (at 10,000') and then drive to OV the next day.... as you know, Independence is less than 20 minutes from Lone Pine.

AKICHOW,

Mt. Diablo is my training mountain, 3000 ft. of gain in 7 miles from Mitchell Canyon. I take the single track up Eagle Peak in the middle of the week , it is just me and the poison oak. I spend so much time on that mountain, the girls at Panda express know me by name. When I walk in they say, "you the deaf guy that climbs Diablo."

Phew. We're planning to stay at OV in July, and I didn't even think to get a reservation! Hopefully there will be walk-ups available!

While at OV last year, there were a couple "hiker" tent sites just south of the Camp Host trailer... the Camp Host ran a good tight ship, named him "Corpsman"...
