Wow. The last few posts are starting to remind me of my family: "What do you mean by that tone of voice?!" "I just want you to listen, not try solve the problem!" "You just. Don't. Care!" (followed by a hurled ash tray. Note: people still smoke in Europe)

Miss Rosie, if one is placed in the situation where she has to clarify that indeed peeps care more about a missiong hiker than missing registers (and vice versa, the insinuation that the numbers suggests otherwise) (because we are all on the fence on this one) Than this society is in deeper doo-doo than I thought.

Gosh, I just remembered why it is that I look at the forums: to collect more material for my next career as a humourist.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Hmmm. It's not clear if the Tyndall ranger removed the actual register box or just the notebooks. Looks like the note just says he removed the notebooks ("have actual pages). So, yes, that definitely happens. At some point in the dim past, I remember a move to pull all the registers (notebooks -- not boxes) that had historic value. This would include many of the notebooks signed by Clyde, Eichorn, Dawson back to Colby and even Brewer. There's very few of those left -- maybe one still out on the Black Divide. They were removed to protect them and are archived for sure.

Is the actual Milestone Mt. box gone?? There's a huge difference between taking the notebook and taking the box. Is this whole thing over disappearing notebooks? I had assumed the concern and accusation was over the entire box disappearing.

In this case, I would be pretty sure they went to the park's archives. Some of the truly old ones go to the Sierra Club archives or the Bancroft (not sure which). Seems like about 15 years ago, they went in and cleaned out anything going back to the late 1890s into the 30s but, again, memory is dim. I do know that they did it, just not when. I believe there was also cooperation from NPS and, thus, backcountry rangers to pull the notebooks.

You could contact the park's archivist (Sequoia Kings) and see what they've got there. Since a brief flurry of interest years ago, there's been no formal policy to remove the paper. It wouldn't surprise me, though, that when a bunch of notebooks accumulate, a ranger would take them and turn them over to the archives. Still, pretty rare I would imagine but does happen.

Great link. Thanks for posting. And who knew? Worth following the link to the Bancroft and see what they've got. Also of note:

Quote:
Some are dated as recently as 2005. This is evidence (along with the fact that most register needs are only for new books, not containers) that collectors are to blame for disappearance of many missing registers. In at least one case, register, container, and even multiple benchmarks have been stripped from a peak.

I had been in contact with Harry Langenbacher back in 2007...He had on his list that the Milestone Mountain Register needed to be brought back to the summit. I told him I was doing a backpacking trip to Milestone Basin and while there hoping to get to Milestone Mountain..and offered to bring the register back to where it belongs..on the summit.

He got me in contact with someone from SEKI..all VIA emails..this person told me to pick the register up at the Tyndall Ranger Station..that it would be waiting for me to pick it up and bring back to the summit.

About week before I left the person from SEKI emailed me to tell me my services were not needed to bring the register back.. that the Ranger stationed at the Tyndall Ranger Station was going to bring it back to the summit of Milestone..but later was not able to do to the weather. So she/he left it on the Milestone sign post where Kyle and Steve found it and brought it to the summit...myself and two friends meant them the same day they returned it..I told them the whole story.

Both Milestone and Brewer registers where removed by SAR in 2006 during a search for a missing hiker in the Brewer area. The original Milestone register was taken down by SAR not a ranger due to that missing hiker...I hope this helps with the explanation of the Milestone register...Not sure if the orginal one has been brought back
