Thank you Kurt, I'll never forget "The Dash", it was the highlight of my day.
Thank you Laura for choosing this hike, it was PERFECT in every way!!!
Thank you TrailBud Doug for keeping track of everything!!! crazy
Thank you Doug Sr. for ALWAYS being such a gracious host for these events!
Thank you GROUP, you are all such amazing people, I felt honored to spend the day laughing, joking, and reflecting with you! The bonds between us were strengthened as we celebrated the lives of our lost friends.

This is the poem that Kurt read (with great heartfelt emotion) on the summit.

The Dash
by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was “the dash” between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your "dash”

That was a wonderful day highlighted by Kurt’s rendition of the “dash”. I have to admit to having a lump in my throat when I think about it. I can’t thank everybody enough for making the day the special event that it was. The group assembling together on top of Trail Peak was the stand out moment of the day, thanks Doug Sr for allowing the use of the hostel for the reception and all the food everybody brought along was amazing, wish I could have stayed longer. I loved the dogs running along with us they seemed to be totally in the moment, Rosie thanks for the ride up to HM, loved your hat. Laura thanks for the ride down and the coffee that had me running for the nearest tree. As I got into my car to head back to LA I realized I had spent the day with a very special family.

Thanks all,

Phil

PS my camera broke on the hike, but, I managed to salvage these pics: http://philbrown.smugmug.com/Other/Group-hike-for-Asabat-10132012/25934883_5cgp9r#!i=2150315027&k=wkCqWFz

On a crisp, fall day, we gathered in the frosty parking lot, greeting friends from San Diego to Washington with hugs and smiles and tears. As a single unit, we set out across the sand, Kurt set the walking pace on the gently switchbacking trail and then above through the trees and rocks climbing the shoulder of the peak. A light breeze stole through the cover to raise goose bumps under tops moistened from sweat. At the saddle below the peak, we regrouped to bring in the caboose, then all set out together for the summit across small, blocky talus edged with snow.

The breeze faltered upon the summit, the sun warming our group as we gazed across the panorama before us. After eating, and smiling, and photographs, and hugs, and more smiling, we gathered as a family and gave thanks. Thanks to Bill, and Wayne, and Karen's husband Mark for their support and knowledge shared. Thanks to Kurt for his expertise and insight. Thanks to Doug Sr for continuing to make this Board available and the Portal home for so many of us. Thanks to each other for making up an incredible family.

The view was clear in the crystal air that afternoon. It seemed so appropriate to be able to see both far, and to see the different areas of the Sierra from that vantage. May the spirits of these men, and others, continue to guide us on all of our adventures, wherever they may lead.

Rest of the pics are here.

Thanks to all who attended Saturday's hike. It was amazing to see so many of my friends from so far back. Much love to all from the high Sierra.

A video I made for Karen, Lana, and Mark from my weekend in Yosemite two weeks ago, but it seemed appropriate here.

It is hard to sum up this memorial hike with words... Kurt's reading of 'The Dash' was definitely the highlight for me. We took a few minutes of silence at the summit and I felt the presence of the men we were honoring. On descent, I remember turning around to my fellow hikers exclaiming "I'm so happy." We are all truly home in the mountains.

Thank you to ALL who helped make this hike happen and to the entire 'crew' for participating. Beautiful day.

Thank you Doug and Earlene for once again being such gracious hosts as you offer the Hostel for another wonderful Potluck dinner on Saturday, to Laura for doing such a great job organizing this, and to Kurt for the beautiful job you did on the summit! I feel so privileged to be a part of such a wonderful, caring group of people! Thank you ALL for being a part of my life.

A moving memorial and simultaneous celebration of life. I am so glad to have been there.

Hey Phil, if you PM me your email address, I'll send you a photo of you and my pup! It came out well.

Stacy, I love all your photos, but there is one to which I am particularly partial! Bet you can guess which one. Great to see you again. And the Magic Bars were worth every calorie.

Doug Sr., I am already jonesing for the Eastern Sierras. Maybe another mid-Winter gathering? I still have that chicken curry recipe that I can try over a single burner camp stove in your parking lot.

Some more pictures to add to the mix:

The group gathers at the summit.

It looks like everybody had a great time. That poem is a real tear jerker. It seems very appropriate for not only Bill but for all of us outdoor lovers who have a passion for not only getting outside but for life in general. Thanks for sharing the pictures, stories, and poem for all those who couldn't be there in person!

God Bless!!

It always warms my heart to see the fellowship of this hiking community to celebrate, to remember and to share. What a great day and a fitting memorial for a man that loved the outdoors by those who whether they had met him or not share his passion and refer to him as friend.

Thank you Doug and Earlene for always opening your heart and your hostel and being the fountainhead of this mountaineering family. Wish i could have been there.
