KW suggested this date...

I'm thinking Cirque Peak. Fairly easy mountain... new terrain for some... we can do the southern approach via (Bill's beloved) Pacific Crest Trail. Exit via the gorgeous Cottonwood Lakes area.

No permit issues.

Days will be short, so I'll volunteer the Hostel for a gathering afterwards.

Such sad news to come home to.... as many have already posted, I've read and appreciated so many of Bill's posts over the years.

I'll be there on the 13th. Thank you Kurt for the suggestion, and Richard for setting it in motion.

Sad news indeed and motivation to wring the last drop from every day we have. See you on the 13th.

More details will follow after I have a chance to talk to Doug and Earlene...

Also need to get distances for the hike/climb. We will have to option to have people come in on a more direct/shorter route if they don't feel up to the Cottonwood Pass/PCT approach...

Doug is OK with the date.
Potluck at the Hostel afterwards.
Presentation by Betsy on her successful Africa trip.
Yes, Jack and Betsy will be coming.

Doug thinks my suggestion for a route is too long, so there will be multiple routes. He also suggested Alabama Hills climbing and/or hiking as an alternate if weather threatens.

How about we do a hike that everybody can do and try to keep the group together? Just my 2 cents on it.

I like this suggestion. When we did the Memorial Hike for Kent in 2009 it was so meaningful to all be together on the summit at the same time. Those of us that may need a little more time can always leave a little earlier, as we did for Thor Peak.

Richard, my brother Ken will be there as well, along with possibly one or two other brothers.

Kurt, if there are more than 15 peple attending, we will have to split up into groups anyway. We've always used multiple routes for our Sierra Group Climbs and try to coordinate it so everyone arrives on the summit at about the same time.

Here are the stats from a walk up to Cirque on Saturday that was dedicated to AsABat:

Cottonwood Pass: 3.77 miles, ~1:30
Start Cross-country up Cirque: 5.87 miles
Cirque Peak 6.97 miles, ~3:15 (1.1 miles of x-c on fairly easy terrain with little bit of scrambling to make it interesting.)

Heading out via New Army Pass:

~1.85 miles to the Pass
~10.43 miles to the Trailhead.
The loop was ~17.4 miles. (A little over 7 hours of walking time.)

It's possible (I doubt it.) that heading in via South Forks would be shorter.

This route up Cirque is probably the easiest way up.
There's Chicken Spring Lake as an alternate destination for those up don't think they have 14 miles in their legs.

Of course, the group can decide on anything else that they would prefer.

Richard,
Should I bring the projector, computer and screen as before for the presentation?
Also, I'll handle the the food organization for the dinner when it's time.

Jack is going to bring one. (I heard him mention that he has had compatibility issues with his Mac.)

I think you should check with Doug Sr. He may have one too.

Since Bill's son is going to try and attend, might we ask him if his dad had any particular spot around the Horseshoe Meadows section that was special? A larger group could hike to that spot to hold a memorial, then all could be free to wander where they will to individually send their wishes and prayers to Bill and his family from where they would like, be it a peak, lake, meadow, boulder, etc.

I agree with Kurt: this is a group celebration of Bill's life. 14 miles is a lot of ground to cover with any size of group.

Sounds like a good idea to me...
Since I don't FB and don't know Bill's son, could someone else please take the lead on this?

BTW, anybody who's interested in going for some peaks can contact me... there's a lot of fun to be had from Trail Peak all the way around to Langley and beyond to Wollyback. Weather may actually be cool and dry enough to go out for some (fun) suffering by then.

Richard,
We need to set a approx start time for the trail and dinner/presentation time and make the trip(s) work into the schedule so everything will work out.
If there's a better idea I'm open.
