NGS maps (new and old) show a couple of natural springs a little to the north of the junction of New Army Pass trail and Siberian Pass Trail. This is on the west side of the New Army Pass. We are doing our 20th anniversary Mt. Whitney hike from Horse shoe meadow with two newbies. This would be a convenient first night camp if we can find water. Did any one recently saw these springs? Would appreciate any info on this. Its 20 yrs since I been on this trail!

There is water in that area but you might want to head to Lower Boy Scout Lake there is a nice stealth camp site there. Head in to the after crossing Rock Creek, when you get to the no camping sign hang a left and climb.

I think you mean lower Soldier Lake. Boy Scout Lake would be quite a walk!

Wbtravis, Ken:
Thanks for the info. I can see a unnamed lake with a steep wall on the west side and plenty flat on the east side within a mile of the junction of New army pass trail and the Siberian pass trail. So presume that this is the lake you both are referring. Counting days till July 8th when we start.

There was no water on the trail between Chicken Spring Lake and the New Army Pass junction when I was there last week. I filled up just before the junction headed north. There is plenty of water at the beginning of the east branch of Rock Creek coming down the New Army Pass trail.
