Arc Pass, Mt. McAdie and Mt. Marsh from near Trail Camp. Spotlight on the Sierra crest. Rime ice coating the summit of Mt. Whitney. The clouds actually parted at times, providing some spectacular views.A few more photos at: http://piotrowski.smugmug.com/Whats-New-1/Mt-Whitney-January-20-2012/21122623_6JD7Q7#!i=1680160752&k=HSg6Ltz I shot with the iPhone only on this climb because I wanted to go fast-and-light. The trail was treacherous as the rime ice started to melt off... slicker than snot. The first pulse of the storm only provided a very light dusting of new snow. As I was heading down, more snow started coming down. Here's hoping the forecast for 6+" of new is coming true today.

So let me see unless I havent read something on another post of yours your on a roll right now summiting every week this year so far. If you continue on this pace thats pretty cool but how are you going to go to Mexico and keep that pace If I don't go to Death Valley next weekend I'll be doing Whitney (weather?)next weekend... Nice going Richard... mark

Seriously, the chances are slim-to-none that the streak will continue thru the whole winter. There's GOT to be a storm that'll drop a few feet of snow!
BTW: I blame this streak on Scully. He's the one who mentioned that this was going to be a drought winter. I started the "each weekend" climbs right after I heard that.
BTW 2: Shin is going to try for one Whitney climb each month this year. Can you delay by a week, or so, so the three of us can do it together?

RICHARD; fantastic pictures. I would love to climb this mountain in the winter, BUT they would probably have to send Bob R and the SAR crew up to carry my FROZEN butt back to the portal. Keep taking pictures Richard we all enjoy seeing them.

Agreed, nice photos Richard. Like the rime ice one the best. Maybe because it makes the rocks look like candy? Rock candy, makes sense.

Thanks all!
I was thinking I should go back to the register to get my poles when I turned the corner and saw the icy blocks. I was thinking I might hurt myself again trying to get to the summit benchmark.
Were you guys hungry while you were browsing the photos?

Richard, this is a great accomplishment. I wish you many years of streak. I have been to the summit 6 times and every body thinks it is a big deal, but compare to your efforts it is peanuts. Great pictures, how long doese it take you to make the round trip climb?

For this one, I left the car around 4:35am, was on the summit a few minutes after 10:00am, and back at the car a few minutes after 3:00pm - so about 10 1/2 hours. Because of the incoming storms, I was pushing the pace a bit.
When Shin and I went up, it was about 14 hours for the RT. This is about what I shoot for on most "winter" climbs, if the conditions allow for a day-climb.
Thanks.

Hey Amigo Richard Mr. Richard, AWESOME Photos! I was exhausted just hearing your time! There has got to be some robotic parts in you to make that quick a climb! Keep the fantastik photos coming. You are the KWPS field reporter of the message board waves. I'd be concerned with that distance and that cold, would freeze some of my "sensitive" body parts! Be safe as we enjoy your trips vicariously. Thanks for sharing, JAORN, (Just a-ol red neck) HN
