OK Techies, three years ago a friend showed me an app on his new I-phone that when the camera was on or the mapping software, cannot remember which, he could point his phone at the surrounding hills and it will name the peaks - had to be a known peak but it was fun to play with. I'm out of touch with that person (not responding to their phone  ) so I'm asking if anyone knows the name of that application, I got a new I-phone for Christmas and turned it on this past week, now it's time to add some cool app's.

I looked all over the I-phone app page online but could not find it.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance laugh

I recently downloaded peak.ar, but haven't had much luck with it as it will only identify peaks that are within 49.5 K of the location from which you are viewing, I have only tried it though from Orange County. It is possible that when within national parks, it might have richer data and greater range.

Patrick, it sounds like you're describing Peak.ar. That's the one I've messed with and it works ok. In other words, it's not very accurate but does give you a good enough idea of the names of surrounding peaks. If you're far way and there are other peaks around it's going to be hard to decipher. I haven't had a chance to mess with PeakFinder yet but look forward to checking it out. On Peak.ar you can change the Maximum Line of Sight on the iPhone Settings page. You can move it all the way up to 150 km. You can also change the number of peaks listed as well.
