As an X-paramedic I would love to see everyone read these. I never had a "code" make it, and I broke a lot of ribs.

My mother died when I was 14 of cancer and to this day I still think she was a biology experiment in ICU for her final 3 weeks. She was a nurse and I am sure she would have never wanted to be "treated" as she was. She was "asleep" the whole time.

The third article went viral, all the way to a NY Times interview.

Well said Doc, #3 in particular.

Aw, shucks.

Unexpected to see this, and thanks for the comments, all.
Working on the book deal, not sure when the movie will be out (actually...... really)

The viral thing is most bizarre, and the outfall from it. NPR interview, I'm writing for the Wall Street Journal under deadline right now...you wonder how this happens from an essay on an obscure website? The NYTimes piece really surprised me, as it was more personal.

I started reading the 3rd article this morning... the comments piqued my curiosity, then when I started reading it I couldn't stop. What a wonderful way to approach death.

When my father passed away he was at home under Hospice care. It was the most amazing, beautiful experience. For the last few days of Dad's life he was surrounded by his family... we told favorite stories of when we were growing up, I played my harmonica as we sang his favorite camping songs, read excerpts from his favorite books, and just enjoyed being with him and each other. We were all standing around his bed when he let that final breath go, and it was a most beautiful experience I will always treasure.

We can all only hope to go like this, surrounded by love and peace. Thank you Richard for posting this, and thank you Ken for a most amazing article. I look forward to reading the others this evening.

When I get older perhaps mid 60's I will get my first tattoo and it will be on my chest and say NO CODE
