I hiked Mt. Whitney for the first time Monday and spent some time going through my pictures. I'm trying to figure out what some of the peaks are in a picture from Trail Camp.

I thought that I knew what the peaks were, but I just read that Whitney can't be seen from Trail Camp. Can someone tell me if I have these labeled correctly and if not, where the peaks are?

Thanks!

Whitney is not in your photo. It is out of the picture to the right.

Maybe this will help you. Here is a photo from Doug's Hostel WebCam with the Whitney Crest peaks listed:

Thanks - I just updated the photo above( press ctrl+F5 if you're still seeing the old one). Does that look more correct?

Based on the second photo what you named Aiguille du Paquoir is actually Aiguille Extra.
Aiguille du Paquoir is to the left between Junior and Extra.
Your photo shows, I think, the Third Needle to the far right.

Thanks for the help.

Does anyone know how many miles are left to get to the summit once you pass Third Needle?

The trail from the Third Needle is about three-quarters of a mile to the summit.

Here is a chart I compiled some time ago. The Third Needle is, of course, between Muir (point 36) and Day (Crooks) Needle (point 37).

Wayne,

That chart is great. I wish I had it for the hike.

Here are a couple of more things I'd like to identify:
What lake is this?

What peak is on the right (s'brutal)?

Is this Mt Thor (center)?

What about this one?

What about this one?

What about this one?

63ChevyII,

If you can tell me the exact locations where you took your photos, it would save a lot of time. I've created a program that tells me where all the named peaks are in the United States (more than 70,000), but I need the view's location. Otherwise, I'm stuck with a lot of calculations trying to mathematically pinpoint locations--very time consuming.

The lake you are asking about is Wales Lake, below Mt. Hale.

Looks like you need a good topographical map for your IDs. I highly recommend National Geographic's topo series.

Thanks for the help Wayne and GigaMike.

Usually I upload my photos to Everytrail.com along with a gpx file from my phone. The website puts the photos on the trail where they were taken. From there I can usually figure out what I'm looking at. Unfortunately, my reception was poor on this hike and I lost about 2 miles, which threw everything off.

Thanks again!

I found this pic on another website and have a similar picture from my day hike. Are these labeled correctly? I think this pic was taken from the switchbacks:

An interesting note is that this picture was taken in 1961. I emailed the guy who took the pic, sending him a recent picture of the summit plaque and a picture of the changes to the sign at Trail Crest (previously read 13777). When this guy climbed Mt. Muir on this same trip, the summit log that he signed was the original one that was put there by Norman Clyde in the 1930s. Here's a link to his website:

The labels are correct.

I got a kick out of his last Whitney photo where he said: "The actual summit is somewhere around this structure." That structure was the summit outhouse in its better days. The Forest Service removed it a while back.
