I plan on summitting Whitney on the weekend of Nov. 1-2, weather permitting and with the proper cold weather gear. Has anyone done so this late in the season and do you know what types of temperatures/ice/snow I can expect at the top. Also, has anyone camped at the Whitney plateau (14,000 ft). What weather/temperatures can I expect there overnight? Thanks in advance.

The weather has been great but I wonder about wind, I will not be in the area till Nov 3 with a possible attempt at the peak on Nov 4

Plus if anyone has information on the Lava Tubes between Big Pine and Independence I would appreciate it, I love spelunking lava tubes but have never seen any information on the ones so close to home.

Thanks

There are lava tubes on both the east and west sides of 395. The ones on the east side are south of Tinnemaha Res. You can see the red cinder cone from the highway. I'm not sure if the road is signed, but its a dirt road heading toward the cone. Take the fork to the left (north fork). The road becomes rough towards the end.

The ones on the west side are at the base of Crater Mtn. Go west at the flashing light in Big Pine (Crocker St.) and drive 3 or 4 miles to Mc Murray Meadows road. Go left and drive to the base of Crater Mtn. Stop at the Visitor Center in Big Pine for maps.
