Hi all, We're looking to hike the JMT northbound leaving from Whitney portal on June 2oth or 21st. At this time do we HAVE TO use the chute/mountaineer route or is the Main trail an option? My other concern is descending down the JMT from Trailcrest, does anyone have any info on how much snow or how sketchy the hike down towards Guitar lake will be? Thanks for any info.

Regards,

Unless the cables clear in the next two weeks (unlikely), you would be best off going straight up the chute adjacent to the main trial (not the Mountaineer Route). Once you get to trail crest, the JMT down to Guitar Lake will almost surely be melted out.

Should be lots of snow further north too. Have fun!

I was up there on Tuesday, and you will definately be going up the the chute and not the switchbacks on June 20 or 21.

Most people, not well acclimated and not possessors of or experienced users of ice ax and crampons would be better off in a boot track that did switchbacks up the continuously snow covered region below trail crest while the weather is warm enough for daily freeze thaw and the switchbacks are still snow covered. They would be better off coming down that track, too,
