I passed by on the way up to Big Pine for a hike up to Sam Mack Meadow ( http://www.mt-whitney.info/viewtopic.php?p=6808#6808 for a few photos from that area ). Couldn't resist the urge to stop and shoot a few photos.

The weather up here is gorgeous. It should hold out through the weekend according to what I'm hearing in the weather reports.

Man..those photos are beautiful. Look at how blue the skies are! I'm so jealous...enjoy the late fall...looks like you are!

Hi Richard your photo proves that Lone Pine Peak and Langley are in fact higher than Whitney,unless its that curve thing people talked about last winter ,since the sky is clear I would rule out refraction or deflection of the vertical unless the digital cameras correct for that.


Clouds pasted over Portal about noon until evening but no moisture and temps staying above normal . Means we are getting melting during the day and freezing at night so the trail is very icy night and mornings . Thanks Doug

One thing I love about being up there is that it's absolutely impossible to take a bad picture, ruling out camera movement. I have eight of my own shots hanging here in my office, and I take a peek every chance I get. That allows me to escape these walls, even for a few moments.

That's one of the funniest things I've read in a long time Doug... Guess we'll have to see if Bob R. will take a string up with a level and run it between the two peaks!

I agree with HikerLaura...seeing pictures from out there reminds me each day (multiple times a day) that those mountains are out there waiting. Although I do have to admit..I'm flying up through Virginia today and the fall colors from 15-thousand feet are pretty darn spectacular.

First things first! We've got to quash that rumor that LP Peak is higher than Whitney.

This is a photo of Whitney and the surrounding area from the summit of Lone Pine Peak. Whitney obviously appears much higher. Wayne can determine whether I was really there to take the photo and should also be able to figure out whether I played any tricks with camera angles.

We drove Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP last Saturday (took all day, due to numerous photo stops, a little hiking, a 35mph speed limit the entire 105 miles of the drive in the NP, and the large amount of other traffic -- sometimes slower than 35mph). It was a perfect, blue-sky autumn day at the peak of the fall color season along the ridge of the Appalachians while overlooking the Shenandoah Valley below us on our right (we drove north-to-south). I know it's not Whitney, but I hope to have some pictures up before long (all from ground level) that you (and others here) can look at if you want. It was a single beautiful day sandwiched between crappy weather before and after that one day.

To post a picture, first it has to be accessible on the web. For instance, the shot below of my eponymous peak is used on my own <a href="http://www.mtritter.org">WWW site</a> so there is a copy of it at http://www.mtritter.org/Images/ritter320.jpg

I put a link to it by including the HTML "img" tag and URL for the image, &#60;img src="http://www.mtritter.org/Images/ritter320.jpg"&#62;, into the text of this post, and the image appears in the post, even though it is off on some other server entirely than where the bulletin board resides.

Alan -- you get a lot of mileage on this Board with "eponymous." It's my second-favorite word on the Board, after "sawyer." Ken once applied that term to himself and actually meant it.

Meanwhile, I have scoured the Sierra and never found a peak named "Alan."

P.S. I know it's dangerous to attempt anything resembling subtle humor on a Message Board. So, in the interests of full disclosure, I have been to your Web site. Your eponymous peak is one of the most photogenic anywhere.

Still, there should be an "Alan Peak." IMO.

Adding Picture Images

I usually leave out the width and height parameters -- You don't need them unless you need to make the picture display in a smaller area than its default dimensions. When I use a picture stored in Smugmug, it is nice because they store the picture in several different sizes, so you can select the size of the picture appropriate for the post.
