Frank and I hiked up Bear Canyon trail,6 mile with 6000 feet elevation again, of Mt. Baldy to try out my new boots, practice rest step walking, walking within controlled pulse rate.

The trail was nice and comfortable and snow free till 9400 feet saddle. The rest of trail to the summit is covered with hard snow on east facing slope and canyon. Some hikers were well prepared and some were not at all. We ran into a well dressed hiker didn't have any idea about the direction to the summit of Mt. Baldy.

The lower elevation of mountain was nice and warm, the higher part of mountain was a snow wonderland. The near the summit was very cold and windy and icy.
Many people ask the trail condition of Mt. Baldy. But there is no one single answer. Even the snow condition changes by the time of the day, general weather condition of the area, location of the area, angle of slope, and wind chill factor, under the trees, sunny spots, traveled spots, the depth of snow level and many other elements. Please look at the picture of the ridge,9400 ft,of west facing and east facing for the difference on same mountain.
Many subjects discussed for the safety can be learned in our back yard before we get out REAL mountains in north.

Again, we met many nice people on the trail.

My pictures are in WPSMB photo album link.

Hello Shin,
Nice meeting you on the way down. What route did you take
from the Baldy Summit to the Ski Hut? I believe I was the
Hiker you reffered to not knowing the way to the summit. You were
kind enough to point out West Baldy vs. Baldy. You suggested I had 5 min to the top of WB then could bag both summits. This was my first time in the snow. I pushed my legs to the limit for the this time. Maybe next. Again, thanks for the directions
and look forward to more of your xlnt pictures.

Hi Rick,
We came up from Bear Canyon to Mt. Baldy summit and went down regular trail on the ridge through trees to Ski hut. Since we were a bit tired from our long hike earlier in the day we picked the safest route down to Ski hut. I am glad that you bagged two peaks in one day. I hope you enjoyed a panorama view of San Gabriel mountains. Sorry,I added extra minutes on your trip.

The area you were at is bit confusing to find the right direction to the summit. The most visible land mark of the summit is the shrub near the summit. This shrub seldom got covered up with snow even heavy snow season.

Sorry we didn't have time to visit. we had to catch our ride to the village with other hikers.

If you are interested in hiking Register ridge route to Mt. Harwood and Mt. Baldy, please let me know.

It was a nice day. Thank you Shin.

After the snow started there was a lot of walking across a slope like this...pay attention every step, don't slip!:
