Today is the day we Americans honor those who have served and those who are serving today.

Duty...Honor...Country...

That is what it was, is, and continues to be.

To all veterans...

Happy Veterans Day

We earned it.

I attended this talk yesterday, by Adm Mullen, the Chairman. He is a local boy. He talked about veterans issues quite a bit.

I was particularly touched when he walked into the room after being introduced, and all the uniformed personnel, and apparently all the veterans, snapped to their feet.

Banners with Photos of our Fallen Heroes who never had the honor to stand before us as Veterans. Please take the time to view this link. Not all of our Fallen Heroes have banners yet because family members have to approve a banner for their son, daughter, mother, father, uncle, aunt, (you get the idea). Once the family member approves the banner, that's when proud citizens of the USA have the opportunity to support a banner. Banners are displayed around the country for Veterans Day, Memorial Day and other National events honoring our veterans, heroes and active military now serving our Great Country. The company I work for supported banners for LCpl. Aaron R. Boyles, US Marine Corp.; Sgt. David J. Hart, US Army; and Sgt. First Class Paul R. Smith, US Army. My good friend's son also has a banner, his name is Sgt. Patrick Shannon Tainsh,US Army, his father is a career Marine, now retired.

Veterans Day is shameful and nothing but lip service. We all should be forced to volunteer something of ourselves to them. That would have a lot more meaning than the current bumper sticker praises.

I agree, we should volunteer something of ourselves to our Veterans. I wonder if any of our Wounded Warriors would like to hike Mt. Whitney with the help of some WPMB veterans. I bet some Wounded Warriors would like that. The Wounded Warrior Project website would be a good place to start on a quest to give back.

Yes, it would be a good thing to do something practical for our veterans and active duty service personnel. What are you doing to help our veterans?

Calling Veterans Day "shameful" is way out of line, in my opinion. That day helps us focus our attention on the sacrifices made by millions of military men and women to keep this country save.

i meant that it is shameful that we really only honor them with just a thankyou or sales flyer.Veterans Day should be a real holiday like xmas and we have to volunteer to help them in some way.I donated money once for proper helmets but thats about it.Lame.When i see soldiers in airports i talk to them. The soldiers dont get paid any attention at all in airports-its depressing to me.

Thanks for the clarification.

BTW: it's Christmas, not "xmas".

I am speaking on only my behalf and not for all veterans...

Veterans, like myself, don't ask for things or special favors. I figure I did my duty honorably for my country. Yes, I do wish my boss would say, "Since it is Veterans Day, why don't you take the day off." But I know that ain't gonna happen. smile Maybe one of these days I will be in for a surprise. You can guarantee next year I will be taking Veterans Day off since it is a Friday!

Yes, I do use my "military privileges" in the civilian sector. Lowes gives me 10% off the entire purchase for anything in the store. Leslie's Pool Service in Fresno gives me 5%. Some restaurants offer only on Veterans Day. If only REI offered 10% off then I would be in heaven!

But I thank all of you for participating in Veterans Day parades. Maybe some day I will go to a parade.

My family at home and my colleagues at work said, "Happy Veterns Day, and thank you for your service." You don't know how much that means in my heart to take just a moment of your day. My reply was, "Thank you. You're welcome. It was an honor," with a smile, a handshake, or a hug. I may be a Marine, I may be tough, but I am a human being first, and I can get emotional, too. Conduct unbecoming? Naw.

Thank you for your wonderful ideas. Please "execute" your plan and "carry out" the plan of the day or whatever is in your heart. Hey, if it feels good, then do it, right?

All of you have already said enough and that is what really matters.

Thank you and you're welcome. grin

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Having been a commanding officer (CO), some of my Marines were not able to make it home for the holidays (money issues, or no family at all). Holidays were spent alone in the barracks. The holiday meal was in the mess hall.

I asked my "civilian" neighbors if they would be interested in "adopting" a Marine for the holidays.

Imagine a young Marine in his dress blues at your home during the holidays. Yes, my Marines were "ordered" to wear their dress blues to these "civilian" functions and to respond with a "Yes, sir/ma'am...No, sir/ma'am...Thank you, sir/ma'am." Turns out, many of my neighbors were impressed.

Fourteen of my Marines married the woman of their dreams at these holiday events. Imagine that. Being the CO, they had to ask for permission to marry.

Permission was granted!

I am a "godfather" to one...as you were...I am a "godgrandfather(s)", too.

Nowadays, it is blue jeans or whatever. But Marines are Marines no matter what they wear. They carve excellent turkeys provided they can bring their K-Bar! grin

Something to consider this holiday season if you really want to honor a veteran. wink

I promise you, it will do your heart really good!

So invite a warrior into your home. If you have a daughter, look out I told you so! smile

Oh, a woman warrior in her dress uniform? If you have sons, you may want to put the reins on them! whistle

I should know...my daughter is a naval aviator in the Navy...she just got word she will be promoted to Lieutenant (Captain in the Marines) next year. I am proud of her.

Sorry, gents, she is spoken for...another aviator...lieutenant, too.

Happy Holidays!

Have fun.

You are quite the romantic, + @ti2d.

I believe that US Marine Jack Northam met his wife Betsy in a somewhat similar way, except that, if I recall the story correctly, Betsy's brother was also a Marine.
