if I strike out this year on a permit what would be some other destinations I could check out. I would like to do at least one fourteener and will have my 15 year old son with me who hasn't done anything technical before. I would be spending around 3 days in the area. We could obviously hike part way up the Whitney trail and shoot for walk up permits also.
Thanks,
Kevin

What time of year are you planning for? I have allways had good luck with walk in permits.

When I was planning my Whitney hike for the day after labor day this year, I didn't have a permit reserved so I made an alternate plan to go up the Meysan Lake trail and bagging Mt Irvine and Mt Mallory.

I ended up getting a MMWT permit so I didn't need to use the alternate plan. But I liked the idea of having all of my plans be the same right up to where I parked my car.

If you don't get lucky with walk-in permits, you could go for Langley out of Cottonwood.

All good answers, thanks alot for the info! We are planning for July but want to have 3 or 4 back up options to make it a good trip either way. I have already done Whitney quite a few times but want to get my son up. I like the Langley idea as a back up. Either way I am sure it will be a fun trip. Will be driving up from Phoenix and plan on going through Death Valley on the way, should be a great trip.
