Well if I remember correctly $4.68 should buy one Coke or a shower on the trek to base camp.
It's not much but it's a start smile

2011 is going to be a "Free Visa" year in Nepal to promote tourism. Too bad they don't make that a "Summit Permit Free" year, although I could see the thousands lining up for the ropes up Everest.

Congratulations on reaching the highest point on Earth!

Free visa will save $100. The climbing permit was $10,000 per climber! Is that too crazy!?! I Ministery of Tourism is really trying to promote tourism in Nepal. I think at some point they need to limit the number of climbing permits they issue. In our case, because of the weather there were only a few summit windows. There were some long lines and waits on summit day - in the death zones eek

The oldest person I know to regularly climb Baldy was Wilson Harvey.
Don't know if he is still alive, but we celebrated his 80th B'Day at the hut after a successful climb. A few years afterwards, he apparently caught a crampon and went tumbling down a part of the bowl, lost his car keys, and (I believe) broke his leg yet self rescued...
Anyone know of him? He was the first person I climbed Baldy with.

Hi Eman,
I met Mr. Harvey a few years ago near Ski hut with his son but not lately.

We were on Baldy last Saturday but many of you were up at Whitney (wish I could have gone). Larry and I will miss the next two weekends because some bunks opened up at Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon and we are heading out grin

Yes bunks - I have had my fill of tent living for a while. This time I'm taking the easy way. There is even a toilet and a shower!

You all have fun. We will see you in a few weeks on Badly.

Hi Cindy. Have fun at Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon! Turns out I won't be hiking Baldy when I'm down south next weekend. My knee went out on Mt. Definance (Oregon) last Sunday. 4935' elevation gain; 11.3 miles RT. I've had problems on steep descents since Mt. St. Helens in Oct. '07. Last Sunday was epic. Hopefully, next time I'm down, I will have this knee issue resolved and we can plan a group hike on Baldy. I look forward to meeting you...

MC smile

MC - sorry to hear about your knee. Make sure you post when you are coming back and we can organize a hike smile

Looks like my hubby will not be hiking anything for a while. We hiked down to Phantom Ranch, spent the night (great place), and while hiking up the next day (about 4 miles from the South Rim) he developed a hernia! He hiked out and has surgery in a few days frown

Anyone going to Badly this Sunday?

Larry has recovered (we hope) enough from his hernia surgery that we are climbing Baldy Sunday grin

We usually hit the summit about 9:15 AM but he might be a bit slow this time.

Hope to see some of you.

Btw, just read the story of Larry driving back to Cal State Fullerton and recovering your Everest Dzi Stone Bead the day after your photo shoot. Just awesome... He's a keeper! Glad to hear Larry is recovering well from his hernia surgery. Have fun on Baldy Sunday!!! smile

Hi MC - yea, Larry is a definite keeper smile

We just returned from our first Baldy hike in almost two months. Larry did well - but we will see how he feels tomorrow.

Ran into Bob but where is Shin?

Today was a beatuiful day on the mountain. We took my mentor and friend, Dr. Beam, up for his first summit of Baldy.

Now it's time to go watch the Charger Game.

Hi Cindy,
I couldn't hike this weekend at all.
I sprained my right knee on Thursday and it got worse on Friday. All accidents happen at lower elevation. Never in the mountains.
It's time to move to somewhere in higher elevation.
This is the very first time in 6 years I couldn't hike because of my physical condition.

I hope my knee will get better by 10-10 for Richard's 100th Mt. Whitney summit. I'll will be there even with one leg.

Shin

Can't wait to hear from Crazy Richard's Whitney Group!

Larry and I did Badly today. Pasted Bob and friends: we were going up and they were going down. Bob like his early starts!

I hope the winds on Whitney were not like Baldy today. As we were coming down the Backbone it had to be 50 MPH.
