Does anyone know the name of the road to turn off hwy 6 to get to the west ridge of White Mt. via Milner Cyn. I've never been out there before and don't want to get lost. Also, if anyone is interested in doing this climb let me know, otherwise I'll just be doing it solo I guess. I'm flexible with time as I am unemployed now and going stir crazy.
Thanks,
Phil

Phil, the turnoff is White Mountain Ranch Road. It's 18 miles north of Bishop, well marked. Turn right and proceed past the ranch and stay on that dirt road to head towards Milner Canyon.
If you find a pair of Black Diamond Sabretooths up there, we could perhaps work out an appropriate finder's fee...
Have fun, L

I'm not familiar with the fire road route. Is that the usual route you drive up the mountain?
Sorry about not getting back to you right away, I was in Florida for a week.

It's doubtful, I was planning on taking enough gear for an overnight trip in case I can't complete it in one day.

Thanks for the info Moosie, I will keep a look out for them. Do you have an idea of which area you left them.
Is there water on White this time of year? Probably not huh!

tif,
Possible but would make for a really long day. The South Face class 1 route up White is reportedly about 14 miles round trip (that is if we can drive to the Barcroft Gate). I imagine that the drive to the gate from Big Pine is about 1 to 1.5 hours. I googled the distance from Big Pine to San Bernardino. It's about 4 to 4.5 hours. This would make the total drive time home about 6 hours. I will be in Yosemite on Saturday as well hiking Mt. Conness. I was planning on getting a very early start on Sunday for White. I have about a 6 hour drive home as well. Are you still interested? When will you be in Yosemite? Also, I have never done White so the information I provided I got from Summitpost and postings on this site.

Snowmanrn,
I think I'm going to pass on doing White as a day hike. I generally need a couple of nights at altitude to avoid AMS and I haven't been training long enough to do 17 miles in a day.
Have fun up there in Yosemite!

Hiked up White Mountain from the Barcroft Gate yesterday. Conditions were excellent. Very warm on top (even though there was a small snow flurry). I day hiked Mt. Conness (~12,650 feet) the day before thinking it would help me with the altitude at White. It didn't! I do not recommend driving to 12,000+ feet in 1.5 hours and then walking to over 14K feet in 3 hours. I got a severe headache. It's an easy walk up and most people were mountain biking it. If I did it again I would definitely try to acclimate better. Beafutiful hike though.
