Hi all,

I have a 4 person two night permit for the main trail starting 7-5, and exiting 7-7. Problem is two people have bailed due to conditions, and the third is about 75% sure he won't go due to back issues.

I don't want my first Whitney trip to be solo. Question is; do i have to turn in extra spaces, or can I find a new group to hike with that doen't have permits? Either way, i would like to join up with a group for the hike. I am camping at onion valley July 4th, and will start the hike early monday morning. Any info or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

Steve B

#1 -- Turn them in. Keep one for yourself. One less platinum highlight on your scalp and you will rest better without having to worry about your co-hikers.

#2 -- Go solo. You won't be the first to do so. You won't be alone on the trail! I am sure there are others who would like your company.

#3 -- Provide TR with pictures of you on summit!

#4 -- Have fun.

Journey well...

Extra spaces...Just tell the clerk at the ESIVC to write a permit for one. The extras are automatically "turned in".

Join another group...Just start up the trail by your lonesome. There are usually tons of folks you will be playing tag with most of the day. It is difficult to join a group because most every individual or group hikes their own hike. If your hike is 2 MPH and the group you joined is 3 MPH there is going to be friction...either them hanging back or you speeding up out of your comfort zone.

Thank you all for your help. I appreciate the fast responses. This forum has been a great help in planning my trip. After months of hard training, I don't want to reschedule.

thanks,

i agree with all of the above.

but, if it were me, i'd call and, keeping yours, release the other three now so that they are available to any callers-in now. i'm sure the callers-in would appreciate being able to know they had reservations ahead of time - rather than just showing up not knowing.

and go and have a great time. you won't be alone.
