......whew it was hot. cry
The snow was soft and deep all day with lots of postholing opportunities, Still lots of snow in the Sierra. It will take a lot more hot weather and melting to allow for approach-shoe only hikes. Check these photos for current conditions.

What? You got something against swimming to the summit? It's like spawning salmon...

Great to see you on Saturday and Sunday, grahamcracker. And congrats on getting back up on high!

Hopefully, the JMT trail will be (reasonably) clear of snow for my August 13-24 thru-hike of the JMT.

So it looks like the drainage is clear to LBS then snow above that? Did you guys use snowshoes? Heading up in 2 weeks, do you think we'll need them then?
We're actually heading over to Fishhook on Russell, how's the snow around Iceberg, need crampons?
Thanks!!

Paul,
Yes, it’s dry up to LBSL (except for the wet stream crossings)
No snowshoes & no need for them.
Currently UBSL and Iceberg lake are frozen over. There's running water at Clyde Meadow and I suspect running water is available at UBSL
In 2 weeks, I suspect the snow will much more consolidated and you’d probably only need crampons in the early morning or on some shady slopes. That said, it’s always hard to predict what the Sierra God can throw at you; she can be fickle.
I believe Kurt’s group may have cut the first boot track down the slope from Whitney-Russell col to Iceberg Lake. I suspect this last warm weekend it offered some 1st class postholing.
Good luck on Fishy. That’s I my to-do list as well
Cheers,
Rick G

Hi Rick,
Thank you for your very good trail condition report and photos. Very good information!!
I could see the Sierra ranges from Mt. Baldy summit last weekend.
I might have seen your blue shirt in distance last weekend. It was a same nice weekend in California but you were 14K and I was 10K.
I'll get up there soon.
Thank you again.

Here's my photos from the East Ridge of Mt. Russell June 5-6, 2010. Near the end of the album you'll see shots of the area around Iceberg Lake and the Whitney Russell Col. You'll also see some short video footage of the creek crossings in the North Fork Cyn below Lower Boyscout Lake. Those creeks are higher than I can ever remember them being.

The snow is super soft and made for some big time post holing up to my hips in places. Hopefully another couple weeks will change that for you.

Have a great time on the Fishhook Arête. It's a great route!

Hey - Great pictures! We talked to you on our way up on Sunday - I thought of you when we saw the gigantic snowball. Great hike.

Thanks Jen and congrats on getting up the MR.

MR condition update:
Just a cautionary note for anyone heading up there this weekend (June 12-13). The predicted Whitney conditions look like a polar opposite from last weekend:
Last weekend (June 5-6); hot, sunny and soft snow
This weekend (June 12-13); cold, chance of snow, and probably frozen water crossings and slick snow/ice conditions

Have fun and be safe
