Yes, petersstarship, read the darned book and stop posting those silly questions here. If we can just get people to stop posting questions and idle chitchat, this board will be perfect. The goal is to have just a very few, very serious posts, preferably only by people who have hiked Whitney at least 6 times and have no need to waste everyone's time with questions. smile

Maybe if ryley reads it again he will recognize the joke. The smiley face is supposed to be a clue.

petersstarship -

partly depends on what you wear on your feet (boots? running shoes? etc.) and what route (the main chute up the mountaineers route from Iceberg is steep and full of scree), but very few people wear gaitors on Whitney. Besdides, if you get some small pebbles in your shoe, it gives you an excuse to sit down an rest.

Went 40 miles from Cottonwood to Whitney Portal without them. Never had a problem.

The obvious answer is: it all depends on what kind of boots/shoes you are wearing. If they are full hiking or mountaineering boots, the gaiters are way overkill in the summer. On the other hand (or foot), if you are wearing low-cut lightweight hikers or trail-runners, then spring gaiters are nice because they eliminate the odd pebble that you collect, and which you put off removing because you are making such great time, and which inevitably causes a blister or laceration to said foot. Happy hiking!
