rei deep discount sale starts friday the 12th. You can start ordering online at 12am on the 12th. Remember, any price that ends in .83 cents you get an additional 50% off. Just went online and saw a pair of LaSportiva Spantik on sale for 449.83. These boots are usually $700.00, but if you wait and purchase on the 12th the price goes down to 225.00. Be careful, you will see alot of sale prices that end in .93 cents. It's the .83 cents you're looking for. Go nuts and happy hunting. John

I think you are demonic! I checked page after page on the REI Outlet for anything ending in .83 cents. Everything had .93 cents. I did a search for your LaSportiva Spantik and, indeed, it was .83 cents! Where did you find that they were giving an additional 50% off for .83 cents? Did you find anything else ending in .83 cents? Is this a spoof?

No, this is not a spoof. I used to work at REI. When you go in to their store you will see items already on clearance. Some of these items will end in .83

It is these items that will be classified as Super Clearance. Meaning, 50% off the already discounted price.

How do these compare with the La Sportiva Trangos and Nepals? Do you think REI also will put these on sale?

Which would you use on a Whitney winter hike or Rainier summer hike?

Hello Whitwalker,

The Spantik's are a double boot where Trangos and Nepals are single boots. I swear by my Nepals for just about everything, but I know Spantiks would be considered a "click" above them primarily based on the double boot system.
The Nepals have suited me well for Whitney during early summer with snow still present, but might be a bit overkill for the dryer late summer months.
Spantiks would be ideal for Rainier though.

Just my opinion.

Enjoy !

Hmmm - was just getting ready to "push play" on a pair of Scarpa Inverno. What do you think on the comparison to the above mentioned Spantiks

inquiring minds =)

Catpappy - Thanks for the heads up. I love a good gear sale.

Is there a way to find out what is going to be offered at the used gear sales before the sales? Does REI put out a flyer or something? And is one store a better bet for gear than another?

Hi everyone. Here's what I know about these REI superclearance sales. Most of the .83 cent stuff will be apparel and accessory type items. Real gear like backpacks and sleeping bags etc. with a price ending in .83 might be few and far between. To make your search easy, when you are at the REI home page, hover over one of the categories in the green band. You'll get a drop down menu, and at the end of it will be a selection for sale and clearance items. Be sure to check out the size and color of the item you're interested in. The only Spantiks left are size 42. Bummer. I have much better luck at an actual REI store. At the stores, I find a wider range of items on sale including packs, bags, and tents. I have 3 REI stores within 25 miles of my home. So, the day before the sale I go to each one and find what I might like to get and try to remember where it is on the rack/shelf. The first day of the sale can be a bit frantic so having a strategy helps. Also, the Atlanta stores usually have a scratch and dent sale a week or two after the super clearance sale. Ask your store if they do the same. One last thing - there were a pair of size 44 Spantik at the main Atlanta store early this week. If interested, the store # is 404-633-6508.

Sorry Catpappy, I guess you aren't quite so demonic after all. I tried the green band drop down technique and found some .83 cent prices in the shoe/boot section. Maybe I'll give it a try on the 12th.

Thanks for the info,

Norman

I'd try and rent before buying the Invernos. I disliked mine so much, I gave them away.

Inverno's tend to fit a wide foot, which mine is. When I was in the market for plastics, they were the only boot which fit properly, but at the time there were only about 4 plastic boots on the US market. They fit me great and if they ever wear out would buy them again in a heartbeat.

I have a wide foot as well and the Spantiks fit me great when I go up a couple sizes. Just FYI to the wide foot club.

Be advised If you opt for the Spantiks make sure you try them on with your crampons. Not all crampons are compatible with them. Also, you will have to extend the length of your crampons to accomodate for the larger double boot sized shoe.
Black Diamond Sabres will work with them.
