Hi WOW!!!! WE GOT PICTURES , the sky, the colors, the contrast is amazing. Malcomb is the star actor of the trip, hanging out waiting for the march to start jumping up and joining in.

Gigamike doing the FA of Mount Anrzwabutcnta without microspikes .And mapping the trail for the group and other to follow.

Looking over the pictures I get the feeling most had the same thought when I started walking this trail .Oh it's downhill in the desert but look over there! behind, to the north the south, to the Whites, to the Inyo's and 5 feet ahead . This was captured by some very great and rare shots .

We found the phone , John, and the magic to unlock the transport rocketship, left one roadkill near the start of the hike and returned later to find wallet and all in place left out in the open all day untouched.

One chicken really can feed twenty people with enough to the use as a topping. This was a very great lesson about hikes don't worry about the food and all the details it just works , very warm and casual dinner with a mix of great food. Thanks everyone for sharing a great day. One of the Dougs

Stacy's Pix are here - Alabama Hills Hike Jan 23, 2010
(there are over 300 pics - get comfy wink )

Hi Doug,
Thank you for the best day hike EVER!!! We still can't get over how lucky all 20 of us were to have that incredible window in the weather for our hike on Saturday. I guess it was just meant to happen. I will mark it down in my history books for sure! Everything I've read about the past hikes was so true. We couldn't have asked for a better leader...so generous and accomodating...it was incredible.
For those who have never hiked with Doug, I highly recommend it. He will educate you, keep you comfortable, and most of all - make sure you have a good time!

This was our first time using proper snow travel gear and damn, it was such a BLAST!! We both can't wait to get out there and snowshoe again. We're already talking about our next trip...WooHoo!!

For those who couldn't make it, we hope to meet you on the next one. Ava, Tom, Jeff S, Kristine, Norma, Ernie, Gary, just to name a few.

Dave - Thanks for bringing Malcolm - he earned his cheeseburger!

Carole - Thanks for the yummy spicy chili!
I'm still bummed that the shoes didn't fit!

Tracie & John - the chicken and salad were the bomb! Sorry that the chicken attacked you afterwards T...hope you heal up quick!

Mike, Richard, & Doug Sr - you guys just keep telling stories and we will keep listening...there is alot to be learned from your experiences...I can't wait to hear more.

Summary - The company and conversation were extraordinary, food was dee-lish, the weather was perfect, the scenery was beyond gorgeous, the hike was just the right distance and terrain to make it enjoyable and fun for the whole group. We can't wait for the next one...all we need is the time and place Doug grin

Thanks everyone,
Stacy
&
Curt

Laughing hard about the "chicken attack" comment - not the attack itself though.

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Maybe we can plan our MR trip around this hike? With all the snow thus far, May might work out better than April (that said, as you mentioned, snow climb/camping preferred)...

Tracie: I'll e-mail you...

I'm envisioning a book of all the WPSMB group hikes one day... Coffee table book. smile Looks like a perfect bluebird day with a great group of adventurists. I'm looking forward to my next hike or climb with the 'crew'. Great pix everyone!!! Love Malcolm...

Doug said it best - "One chicken really can feed twenty people with enough to the use as a topping." Crock pot ice-capades.
Seriously though, that ice really can be treacherous.

Hi I have added kitty litter and table salt but I think the melt during the day is just enough to get the concrete wet/damp and form sheet ice in that area and by the corner of the building caused by air current when the temps drop to around 20.Thanks Doug

Wow, sometimes it's really a bummer living so far away from the Sierra....

It looks and sounds like it was another great group hike! Thanks, everyone, for sharing!

Looks like a great day for everybody.
Any chance that somebody has a .gpx or other GPS file of the hike so others of us can try it or parts of it in the future?

Otherwise I'll just go old fashioned with the map.

Hi Rumpled
Try GigaMike's photo page, I think he posted the route as a picture from the Nat Geo mapping program.

Hi Rumpled,

When I get home tonight I'll clean up a few areas on the original GPX file and then create a new one. I'll post it here so anyone can download it.

Whenever you want, M.C., although it would be real tough to do both in a three-day weekend. And, then there's the permit issue. If you're staying down here for multiple weekends, it would work.

You could do both in a three dayer; would be tough for me... whistle I'm looking at coming to OC for 9 or 10 days. So I could do back to back weekends if that would work for you. Was wondering; how many miles is the Thompson Trail? Another possibility would be to do the MR mid-March (might be too early though). Dave and I will be in OC on a business trip at that time.

14 miles.

March would probably still require snowshoes, making it that much more work. It is usually mid to late April before you can just boot it up. May would be better as long we don't encounter a heat wave. The late Spring postholing is worse than winter (in my opinion).

BTW, there are others who want to join us, which might be another reason to keep it in the non-quota season.

Let's stick to mid through late April depending on conditions as we get closer. I'll just plan on a few days before our weekend climb to do a little solo hiking (just easy trekking). Would be a good chance to use my new Garmin Dakota 20 gps (taking REI's class this Sat.) Looking forward to the MR with you and 'crew'... smile
