When I was there in June 2006 there was a sign at the trailhead:
Warning!
*Winter conditions exist on Mt. Whitney
*You are responsible for your own safety. You must recognize hazards and act appropriately.
*Conditions may change quickly and without warning.
*Location, wind, weather and time of day will all affect trail conditions.
*Be prepared for steep, ice and snow covered slopes, frigid temperatures, wind, sun, rain, sleet, ice and snow all in one day.
*Carry equipment appropriate for winter mountaineering, and USE IT PROPERLY!
*Be prepared to turn around. Do not be obsessed with reaching the summit.
*If you are not familiar with winter mountaineering and mountaineering equipment, this may not be a good time to visit Mt. Whitney.
People DIE Here!
It was not there in August 2008.
I remember re-thinking everything I had packed and making sure I had everything when I saw that sign.
Why was this sign taken down? Or is it just there in the winter?
