Yeah, talk about wishful thinking... eek

Scientific proof that you are right (about the wishful thinking part).

Didn't even need to read past the intro...

recognize the limitations of their abilities

So training is the answer...

- Get some wilderness skills training.

- Have the SPOT device require an unlock code that you will not get until you've completed a CBT on the proper use of the device. (How many times have we heard from people (even on this board) about how they didn't RTFM before heading out with the device.)

I really don't understand how anyone can think what those 4 guys in the Canyon did was wrong. Anyone should clearly see that those guyas are far more important than anyone else, and everyone should cater to their every whim. </sarcasm mode off>

I've used a SPOT for 2 years in the non-track mode and am quite happy with it. It is fairly intuitive and user friendly. However, you still have to pay attention. Last Labor Day I was attempting to power the thing up while setting up camp at Lower Rock Creek (invite fm the trail crew to join them for a beer - but that's another story) - not paying much attention to the SPOT. Turned out I was pushing the "Help" button instead of the "Power" button. Fortunately, it appears that the thing has to be powered on before any of the other buttons will work.

Life is hard - but life is a lot harder when you're stupid - Sgt. Stryker - aka J. Wayne - Sands of Iwo Jima.
