Hello,

I recently hiked up to Kearsarge Pass. I have a book called "The High Sierra" by R.J. Secor which I am sure most of you have heard about. According to this book, the distance between the Kearsarge Pass and Onion Valley is 4 miles, I thought it was 4.7 miles, then somebody on the trail tells me that it is 5 miles long.

Do anyone knows that true distance? where do one gets the right information on distances from one place to another?

I'm curious, I wonder who is right? I’m perplexed.

Its about 4.7 per my gps.

I backpacked Bishop to Onion 2 weeks ago, the descent from Kearsarge Pass to Onion Valley trailhead took 3 hrs 20 min, that's a total time incl breaks and sat phone call to arrange pickup. I typically do a 1.6 mph "knee-speed" backpack descent, based on years of my trail notes and topo maps (no GPs), so that equates to 5.3 miles or so. Harvey

i recently did this hike. i had my gps and it read 4.7 miles. and if i remember my map total was 4.7 as well.

This is a silly interjection, but once after a climb of Mt. Gould, a friend and I descended from Kearsarge Pass to Onion Valley in 59 minutes. Including a lengthy skinny dip in Gilbert Lake.

I was younger.

I'll check it on my GPS Saturday. I'm headed out of OV to Kings Canyon (Roads End) and back. Plan to take ALL of Saturday. ............................................DUG

Glad you didn't skinny dip in Flower lake. hahaha I was there last week with my scouts and we all drank from it. ;-)

Thank you for all the responses, I guess, it is 4.7 then. I need to buy one of those watches that keep track of the miles like the Garmin 405 I think it's called.
