I'm doing some research for an article and was wondering if anyone knows about the once proposed tramway to the top of Whitney. When, who, etc.

Thanks in advance...

This thread was also started on Summitpost. Apparently plans were actually considered back in the day. Here's the link to a 1926 article in Popular Mechanics:

And the thread on Summitpost:

Fascinating to imagine how differently things could be today. From an engineering standpoint this project would have been an extraordinary feat.

Don't let these people fool you. The WhiTram was built years ago. Tickets run about $25 these days. It's a great ride.

And on top, of course...

Here's where it begins -- the famous WhitneyLand Hotel:

If you can't get up there under your own power and will then you don't need to be up there. It should NEVER be a commercial venture but simply a place to cap off an achievement and goal.

Go ahead and do it. The portal will turn into a mini YOSI valley with all the people that will come.

You think the Bears at the portal are a problem now..............

How about a trans-Sierra tram along the HST? Just joking of course.. I am soooo glad the proposed tram was never built.

Where's Hunter Lake?

I know that a few of the Sierra peaks have had their elevations adjusted down (Barnard being one), but the article states 30 other 14ers? What were they? Bob? Wayne?

A tram to the top of Whitney would be really cool as long as they never build a tram to the top of Whitney wink

I'm with you Moosie, either a full on escalator or nothing at all.

HAHA, don't mince words now Moosie, tell us how you REALLY feel! grin

Agree 100%. No worries though, these days you could never get an engineering project like that built without 100 billion dollars, approval from everyone and their mother, a horror movie full of permiting challenges, etc. Seems these days you can't even get the permits, environmental impact reports, coordination between agencies to remove some of the crumbling civil engineering projects they pulled off in the 30's and 40's that dot today's landscape, let alone build something new.

For those of you who don't understand the importance of the escalator, I'll point you to the tram project on Half Dome. When the the budget cuts hit, the high towers, tram cars and motors went away and all we got were the stinking cables!

With an escalator, even if they never power it up, at least you have stairs. In today's shifting fiscal climate, it's important to have a plan to cope with potential setbacks.

<insert horrified groan here> Aren't there already enough "stairs" on the main trail????

Escalators have shorter steps than many of those on the trail now, for those people with short legs. Know any of those?

That goes for Diamox, too. Sorry, had to throw that in.

Hey, isn't there a proposed Whitneyland photo? I have one but it is in My Computer and I don't have a link.
