Hi Snow and cold front came last night, about 3 inches fell in the Portal and the Pond froze The road is very icy at the trailhead and around the loop.

Expect full winter mountaineering , most are using the chute north of the trail above trailcamp, very few staying more than a few hours on the trail and leaving , summer type hiking is over. One car in the parking lot tonight so looks like all the others walked from town?

Store will close Sunday Night Oct 22, will be around the following week boarding up so will post if any more weather moves in Thanks Doug

Thanks for another great season of information and hosting such a nice meeting place Doug. I'm sure everyone gets a bit sad when they read you are boarding up for the season. If I were up there I'd help you board up and drink down your beer supply so that you don't have to box it up and take it back down the mountain.. wink

Agreed: Thanks for all the information and for maintaining the board. It's helped not only with my Whitney ascent but also planning other trips!! I'd have to be on board for the beer party to thin out the supplies!! ;-)

Have a great winter season. Can't wait to hear of the opening next season!

Thank you Doug and all of the Portal Gang for another great year! Considering my herniated disc/sciatica I still managed to make it to the top twice. Many thanks to those who offered advice and gave me hope that I will hike again. My close friends BruinDave&Jane, Kandy, Erin, Horacio, Kristan, and Anne inspired me and all of them made to the top for their first time! I guess when the WPS closes the posts start to wane. I plan to be up there around Thanksgiving just to take in the views again.

Journey well...

Thanks Doug - one of life's unquestioned pleasures - a beer, a burger, and wonderful company at the store after a day, a week, or longer in the mountains. And good luck with the hotel. Think you'll be amazed at the instantaneous customer base you have immediately after opening. There is payback for being one of the good guys.

Thanks Doug, for the food (and the food for thought) and of course for the forum.

I hadn't done Whitney in 15 years or so, and I was able to do it this year only because this board is here as such a great resource. Thanks for your time and work making this thing go.

I noticed someone had mentioned you have (or are acquiring) a hotel. I plan on bringing my family with me next year when I go back up - I'll be sure to look up your place when we come so we can stay there. Best of luck!

ps I just ran a search here on the site and didn't come across any info on your place. If you don't mind, will you post the hotel name and specify if it's in Lone Pine or elsewhere?

Doug's motel isn't finished yet -- Doug, I hope you can get back to working on it now that the Portal is closing down.

Here is the <a href=/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004000>"Name that Inn"</a> thread.

Yep, I enjoy the board as much as the next guy (or girl). We'll be in Death Valley Sunday through Wednesday and then a night (as usual) in Lone Pine at the Dow Villa. I'll yell at you if you're up working on the hostel. I'll be the runner and if I miss you, I'll see you at the WWW marathon in May.

Hi Doug,

Hope that you get everything stashed away before winter really sets in.

We really enjoyed the chance to meet up at the end of our trip, we did get back into Yosemite and had a great day on 'Clouds Rest' before heading back to San Francisco & Scotland.

Will try and post our pictures.

Thanks for all the info

Jonathan & Shona
