Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Does the permit allow a group to split up?

We recieved a day permit for 6 people. Can our group split up or do we have to stay together with the permit holder. If we are issued 6 different permits than I don't see an issue of splitting. If we are issued only one, than there is the problem. I ask this question because about half of us have a good chance on going the the summit. The other half has the plan of going until they are satisfied, and then turning back.

The permit leader gets the actual permit.
They also issue toe tags for every member of the group - so no problem.

"toe tags"? sounds a bit pessimistic.....

I thought they were Deer Tags, so when we were "Bagged" we could be taged for fish and game

As Tomcat noted, the group leader signs and carries the Permit Sheet while the rest of the group gets colored Permit Tags that are about 3-3/4 x 8-1/2 (one-third of a letter sized sheet) that have the group leader's last name, the group size, and the entry date marked on them.
