I will be part of a group of four who will be at Whitney Portal camping tomorrow, then heading up the mountain on Thursday. Who else will be up there during this time? Please respond to this message, I would like to meet you!
I'm looking forward to communicating with anyone who will be at the portal or on the mountain during this time.

Oh darn. I'm from Irvine in the 50+ age group and we are hitting the main trail Sat. AM. Staying at Horseshoe Meadows Thur. and Fri. nite. This is my 6th time up from various trails in last 15 years. Sounds like you have an interesting group. Will they be reporting on it anywhere?

Hello cubeman, we should be down by Friday night, we only have a permit for one night on the trail, then we might go camp for a day at Horseshoe Meadows or elsewhere in the area.
We are doing this for our own benefit, I will probably post some photos later though.
I hope you have a great trip and - stay safe!

I'm the leader of a Phoenix, AZ 4-man group going up MT on Friday. First time for all of us. We're staying at the Dow Villa and will probably start at 3 a.m., if not a little earlier.

We have no scientists or other prestigous members in the group. But one is a well-known lawyer accustomed to be being carried in a sedan chair. Should be lots of fun. See you on the trail.

Overnight permits are good for more then just one night.... if you have an overnight permit for entry on the 9th then you don't HAVE to exit on the 10th... you just have to give the Ranger your basic itenirary (sp) when you pick up your permit...

Hi SoCalGirl, NorcalBill here again.. you wrote:

Is this good for the Main Trail?? So if I have an overnight permit for Thur. Aug. 6th, leaving Aug.7th, I could stay until Aug. 8th....or even the 9th without getting in trouble?? That would be so cool, I must be missing something though.

Thanks again for you help, (Promise I won't bug you all the time)

Hey tompickrell,

My friend and I are planning a single day summitt on Aug, 4th and also plan on staying at the Dow Villa the night before. We also planned on a 3:00 AM start. Any planning/timing tips related to getting from the Dow to the trail head would be appreciated.

Going up the portal road in the dark... give yourself about 20-30 minutes to get from LP to the Portal and find a spot to park and get your gear together and such...

Howdy NorCalBill!

"Overnight Permit: A wilderness permit issued for a multiple day period. Inyo National Forest will issue overnight permits for up to 14 contiguous days."

Your OVERNIGHT permit is for ENTRY on August 6th. You can stay up to 14 nights on the trail with that single overnight permit. When you received your reservation confirmation in the mail there was a piece of paper with it that asks for your itenirary.. where you plan on staying on the trail... how many nights... just fill that out and have it all ready to go when you get to the place where you pick up your permits....

And feel free to bug anytime...
~Chris

Aside from the Trail Crest exit quota (see the Wilderness Permit Options Note 3 ), there is no quota on permits after the entry day. The number of days on the permit is used for "planning purposes." Itineraries are also helpful if somebody is reported missing.

What you are "missing" is the fact that Inyo National Forest is transparently managing the wilderness. You may have heard the expression "You cannot manage without collecting metrics." What they are doing is collecting data on trail usage. That is why they want to fill out your actual itinerary and mail it back to them when you are done.

Do you like the fact that the wilderness is being managed?
