Hi Laura,

I'm not really a beginner. I have done Whitney, So I know about the altitude and mileage. I have done a lot of hikes in Yosemite, Yellowstone park and a few overnight. I've also done two of the Breast walks. My last overnight my pack was about 35lbs and I kept up with all the boys and I'm short.
I have no problem being self-sufficient. It is totally up to you. No hard feelings either way..

Ava, that's fine! grin I just wanted to check since you said you were a "newbie". I had written initially that this was not meant to be a beginner/learn how to backpack sort of trip. Not knowing you, or your background, I am simply making sure that you had an understanding of that!

I am really looking forward to the trip, ladies! Looks like Team Hypoxia is about to have a huge burst of female memberships!

Laura,
No problem, I would be checking if I was you as well. I totally understand about the beginner thing. I have done a lot but I just think of my self as a newbie compared to some of the guys that I hang with. I look forward to getting together with some of you ladies in my neck of the woods before this hike.

Thanks
Laura

Hey SoCal,

I would love to get together some time and hike with you. I'm always up for a good hike. Let me know when and where, I'll be there..

Hey Ladies... I have an open seat in my car now... Ava... I know you're in Carlsbad area (right?) if you wanted to ride with oohikeroo, SanDi_carole and myself... let me know. Maybe you can drive over to the "east side" and leave you car in Spring Valley at my place in or Poway at Caroles...

It might be a little close quarters... but I think it'll be fine.

For those of you riding with me... I am working up a tenative schedule of drive times and when we need to be leaving.

I will let all of you know though that it is my intention to not return to San Diego until Monday. I don't want to hike all day Sunday and then drive all night. Let me know if this is going to be an issue (work or whatever) so that we can figure things out if it needs to change...

SCG, That is cool that I can ride with you. I can leave my car at your house. Or we can always drive my Durango it seats 7.
I can take Monday off. That is no Problem.

Do we still need to get passes for this?

Can't wait grin

I have no issue driving.. and my Saturn is probably better on gas mileage anyways. LOL. thank you for making teh extra drive down to my place... it'll be easier the detouring to Carlsbad to grab you.. lol...

I'm getting so excited!!!! This is gonna be a blast!!!

Update:

OK, so I have a permit for 4 right now. I'm still kinda in the dark about just how many are going total.. We should be able to get walk-in permits for the rest of the group, I'm guessing there are around 10 of us all told? Chris, can you get a head count? I can happily go to the ranger station on Thursday here in town and get the rest of the number, 4 was all that was available for the reservations.

Time for leaving:

I'm thinking early-ish, since Late July is notorious for thunderstorms, and I'd like to have most of the hiking done, preferably camp set up by mid-afternoon. That way, we could have tents to dive into if the rain starts to dump. Sooo... that might mean a 7-8 a.m. start from Mosquito Flat. It takes about 30-45 minutes to get there from the Moose Lodge, so tack another 60-75 minutes if you are coming from LP and the Hostel. Another good reason to start early is that this is one of the most popular trailheads in the Sierra, and the parking lot fills up FAST. So if you don't want to walk an extra mile on the road after dumping packs off, we might want to head up early. I'm negotiable on this a bit, and if people are nevous about directions and such we can always meet at the Moose Lodge and caravan up from there.

Blooty and Chris had something going for a while there about a potluck, which I think is a great idea for the first night. I'm all about the treats! Maybe you guys could start another thread and we can pool ideas on food and determine gear needs.

One last request I would make of all participants is to put together a small (3x5) emergency card. I will collect the cards and keep them in my first aid kit during the trip. Please include: name, height/weight, emergency contact information, and any allergies/medical conditions. I will absolutely keep these confidential, and if people are uncomfortable, you can place yours in a sealed envelope with your name on it, only to be opened only in case of an emergency. This is for all of our safety, ladies. I want to make sure we have a good time out there!

I love the fact that there is so much interest in this, and that other threads have popped up related to training, meeting for hikes, and getting to know one another! That's the whole point! You GO GIRLS!!!

As soon as I get a clear list of participants from Chris, I will send out my direct contact information. Please let me know if you have any more questions!!

Chris: "Bee", count me in!

Miss Moosie:

Can you help me out a bit with logistics? I am coming in from Sacramento, ca., so should I be booking a thurday night (July 28th?)at the Hostel? And then a Sunday night when we return if I want to wait til Monday to return (ie -- is the Hostel the gathering point?)

Ladies:
Is there any chance to car pool from the hostel to the trail head? I will have driven a long way alone, already, and it would be a great break to ride along with others for the schlep to the TH

Miss Moosie:

Do you have a map, GPS or viewable course that we will be following, so that I can show/tell others where I will be? Sorry to sound so ignorant, but this is waaaay south of my PlayGround (Yosemite)

Ladies and Miss Moosie, feel free to PM me with any answers, suggestions, etc

Bee

I would also like to carpool from *somewhere*...but if blooty can make it to the trailhead, she has room for 1 person. She only has 3" of ground clearance blush

Ok Ladies... the trailhead is at close to, if not at, 10K'...

Do we want to all pitch in for a night (Thursday) at the Hostel and then just get up early to drive up to rally point MooseLodge and then follow Moosie to the TH?

I already have a reservation at the Hostel for a room (four beds) on Sunday night so we don't have to drive back to San Diego after the hike. (If more ppl are coming on Sunday night I can either call back and get another room or try to get RM 11 which is the large group room, let me know).

This is about what the timeframe would look like:

If we stay at the Hostel Thursday night and figure for a 7-8 am hike start on Friday, we would need to leave Lone Pine by 5:30 or 6am.

If we stay at a campground (there are several in the Toms Place area) we can cut time off that (and save those coming from the north an extra hours drive on Thursday).

So... let me know what you guys want and I will make reservations for our group...

1. Hostel
2. Campground
3. Another suggestion from anyone?

After a long days drive; I would rather just Hostel it and have a nice, organized start to the hike. Early start -- no problem, I get up at 4:00am every weekend and hit the road by 5:00am.

I would LOVE to be able to carpool and organize from a staging area. camping on Thurs night puts more pressure on my arrival time/place/set-up...hauling down there is going to leave me tired as it is.

VOTE: HOSTEL!

Do i need to make a seperate reservation for myself? I am not sure who is occupying the rest of beds in your room. I also would like to stay on Sun nite crazy

Sunday night is a definate. LOL.. there's no way I'm hiking all day and then driving all the way back to San Diego!!!! wink That would just be silly!!!!

I will definately call and make sure we've got enough rooms/beds for Sunday night...

Bee: if you're coming from Sacto, um.... you don't need to drive all the way south to LP and then back up here. Why don't you put in your reservation with me at the Moose Lodge?

Now, if the list is what it is (8 total?), then I will also put out there that we can crash here at the ML. There's a lot of floor space (come on girls, we are CAMPING all weekend), BUT ONLY ONE BATHROOM. Hmmm... 8 women, 1 bathroom. yikes... maybe that wasn't such a good idea...

Anyway, I'm out the door. Happy 4th. We'll figure it out.

The MooseLodge it is!! I thank you! I realized that there was backMooseTracking from LP, but I had no alternate idea at the moment. Great idea, I will pencil it in as a plan (the less driving the better)

Crashing at the MooseLodge on Thursday night would be awesome Laura...

I'll still hold the reservation at the Hostel for Sunday night though so you can get ready for work for Monday morning!!!
