It was a clear weekend, very few clouds. We stayed at the Portal Thursday night, started our hike Friday morning. Camped at Outpost on Friday, then two night at Trail Camp.
The cables were still snowed over, it was a little sketchy crossing the one section of the cables, we did it without crampons/ice axes. Our return was later than expected, we didn't get to the cables until 6:00pm, they were not iced over yet, so we crossed with caution. I must admit, it's a little scary.
Overall a great trip, 5 days at Whitney; only bad part, I got laid off two days before our trip.

Thanks for the trip report. Sorry to hear about the work situation. I am sure it was hard to relax and enjoy your trip with that on your mind. Good Luck!

thanks polishdog! your report and photos are greatly appreciated. I'll be there this coming weekend and it really gives me an idea for what to expect. I'm hoping the weather stays warm so we don't have to worry too much about that snow in your photos,

thanks again and sorry to hear about you work

We talked to a lot of people coming back down - most said it was best to ascend the cables at 9:00am and descend by 3:00pm. Even though we reached the cables at 6:00pm, the snow trail was not frozen over, probably due to warmer weather occurring each day.
Just use extreme caution.
