We are planning to enter the trail on Weds. 8/6.
We would like to stay at the portal campground on the eve of Tues. 8/5 to help aclimate.
Would anyone comment on our chances of showing up and securing a spot?
Attempts to call the campground number on the website register a constant busy signal.
Again, any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Unless it's changed dramatically in the last two years you should have no problem getting one of the walk-in sites. They are first-come, first- served and only cost about $5 a night. They are just tiny tent pads literally right next to each other. Only big enough for a two person backpacking type tent. I spent two nights in them a couple years ago and everyone sharing the very cozy area was cool. There are bear boxes right there for everyone to share, and the walk-in part is misleading since you can park about forty feet away. There are also toilets about fifty yards away, and the store is pretty close. I don't think you can get a full size campsite on short notice but I'm not positive. No harm in trying. Just so you know, all you have to do to get a walk-in site is find one available, and than go to the close by self pay station. Fill out the little envelope, put in your exact payment, (bring small bills) and drop the envelope in the slot. Good luck on your trip!

Bruce,

I agree with SoCaHike. The fee is $6. The closer you are to noon the better chance there is to get a campsite, but during the week this shouldn't present much of a problem. If these sites are full go to the family campground. Half the sites are first come; first serve and cost $14/night and you can stay a couple of nights if you want to.

Bill
