Looking at maps, it seems like following approximately the 7500' contour might work.

Seems to me one could save dropping and re-climbing about 500'.

We did Tenaya- Cloud's Rest - HD - one of the prime hikes on Earth. Yes the cut eliminates about 500 vertical feet and there are even traces of a trail but be forewarned, some of the stuff is a bit of steep rock. Lucky I had my 21 year old son scouting the way. Hit the valley, stay at Ahwahnee for a great room/dinner/vino then next morning snag a lift back to Tenaya.

I had planned to go to Yosemite the 29th for 4 days but I messed up and thought this weekend was memorial day but now I know it's the weekend I planned and I do not want to go there on THAT weekend lol so I am going to push it back to the following weekend.

I have never been there so my hikes are more tourist based, I want to take the 4 mile trail up to Glacier Point then pick up the Panorama Trail and take it down over Nevada Falls and back down to the valley, it should be about 14 miles.

The other is take the Yosemite Falls Trail up to Eagle Peak and back.

The hike up 4 Mile to Panoramic to the top of Nevada and down is a tough nut. Beautiful perspectives though. There's a fair bit of climbing to do on the second half of Panoramic, after the river crossing.

The Yosemite Cloud's Rest trip is a GO! Anyone have any info on the snow level there? My 12 year old needs 20 miles to finish his Hiking Merit Badge for Boy Scouts and I need to burn off a little winter fat before Whitney on the 5th of July. We should sneak into the park about 0300 Saturday morning and be hiking by 0400 (real hikes need flashlight time!). We will get as close to Cloud's Rest as possible (snow depending). We are going up the JMT since it's a little longer than the Mist trail (in case we turn around early due to snow) and will divert over to the Half Dome Trail if we really need more miles. As soon as I get him safely down we will fly out of the park and back home to rest on Sunday. Seems my Memorial will be spent standing the duty. How ironic. Hope to see some of you there!..............................................DUG

I'll be doing Half Dome on May 26th with my 15 yr old boy and 12 yr old girl, along with 2 other small groups.
See ya on the trail if you're up there. We're heading out of Happy Isles at about 4 am., up the Mist Trail, and then planning on coming down the JMT back to Happy Isles.

Good luck!

Anyone have any thoughts or feedback on snow level on the trail if any to Clouds Rest? And, how much snow will there be on the Mt Dana Trail? I'm bringing the axe and crampons anyway, but just curious.

There is no trail, but you might find the "use path" on the lower section.

Check the Yosemite Tioga Pass web cam. That is where you park to start the climb. There is almost a foot of snow there right now.

Hi...

I did Half Dome on Sunday 5/18 (as a jog, start at Happy Isles 4:45am, summit 7am, back at Happy Isles 9:20am :-). There was almost no snow at all up to Half Dome and only a couple of patches on Half Dome itself. My photos don't capture it, but it looked like Clouds Rest was largely free of snow on the south side; I would expect patches of snow at worst if coming from Yosemite Valley. There is plenty of snow at higher elevations as seen from Half Dome.

Mt Dana only has a "use trail", but it's used heavily enough that it's very obvious in summer. As someone pointed out, the Tioga pass cam shows there's enough snow to fully cover it.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter,

Thanks for the info. I'm counting the minutes until I can get out of here and on the road north. Weather is supposed to be in the 80's in the valley this Saturday. Should be great weather up higher..........................................DUG

Hi everyone.

Thanks again for your input and suggestions.

Just to let you all know, we had a great trip over the weekend! (despite the hoards of people there).

We successfully summited Mt. Dana on Saturday and then did our combo-hike of Half Dome & Clouds Rest on Monday. Awesome 3-peak weekend!

I'll give a better trip report when I get home later.

Has anyone combined Half Dome with Clouds Rest for a long Dayhike? I am assuming this is roughly 25 miles, +6,000ft gain?

Yes, I do this every July. I don't think the elevation gain is quite 6,000 feet, however. A more pleasant two-day hike is starting at Tuloumne Meadows and hiking to Happy Isles... 27 miles one way, overnight at Curry Village and return the next day. The return trip is about 5800 elevation gain. That is a GREAT hike!

Happy Isles Trailhead is at 4020 feet and the gain to Clouds Rest is 5910 (elevation 9930). I don't remember exactly, but from the Half Dome/Cloud's Rest trail junction to Half Dome the gain is around 1800 or 1850. And those numbers are NET. Where are you starting from?.......................................DUG

Typo. Fixed. I was trying to describe what the elevation gain was for the hike. Doing both from Happy Isles would get you close to 8000 feet of UP.
