My 12 year old son summited Whitney with me in July of 08. It was the first time for both of us. Views like this one made me an instant Whitney addict and I can't wait to go back again. When I took this picture it was a breathtakingly clear day. I never thought anyone could even begin to name all of these peaks, but now I wonder. Wayne' database and software are truly impressive. So I thought it would be interesting to post this and see how many peaks can be identified from the picture. The original is better than the photobucket version, but I don't know how to post the larger version. I am sure to some of the more experienced on this board this pic is a ho-hum another picture from Whitney, but to me it is reminder of the amazing view to be had from the top of the highest point in the lower 48 and an inspiration to return.

Iseebergy: no such thing. You were indeed up there on an amazing day. I'm sure Wayne (or most of the other guys) can fill in any blanks but the one you caught the best was Mt. Brewer (just left of center at the skyline): it's just left of center on the skyline with the snow. It is flanked by South and North Guard Peaks. Following that left, you are running the Great Western Divide, showing Thunder, Table, Midway, and Milestone Mountains. I really hope I get a chance to get in along there again this summer: it is truly one of my favorite areas to explore.

That is an exceptionally clear photo you took. My database shows over 350 named peaks in your field of view within 100 miles, although a number of these would be blocked by higher and closer peaks. I would need to do more study to see how far your photo reaches, but it looks impressive.

Others here on the Board have annotated-panoramas with all the main peaks in your photograph.

Thanks Moosie! Hey if you are ever in the Visalia area give me a shout and I will take you to lunch or something. I would love to meet you. Your TRs have been wonderful to read and very inspiring! I saw a car the other day that had moose antlers on the windows kinda like those little flags people put on the outside of their windows, I wanted to get a picture of it but couldn't. By the time the light was green again I had lost the car.

Isn't it sad that we have to discuss clear days as the exception not the norm. I haven't been back to my old home in Utah for a very long time, who knows if the air is still as clear as it was. It was GASP 30 years ago...
So you think that some of the peaks are nearly 100 miles? Certainly the 67 miles in the Denair picture? I have others from that day and you can almost reach out and touch the Kaweah peaks as well as the peaks down in the Mineral King area. Oh yeah and the SJV smog is clearly visible on the other side of the divide.

I pored over the background peaks, but I guess as beautiful as the day was, the pixels faded out in the background. The farthest peak I could identify is Feather Peak at 58 miles. This peak is behind and to the right of Junction Peak, which you can find in Dale Dalrymple's panorama at 332.2 degrees. Feather Peak is at 332.7 degrees in your photo.
