Here's a super bowl alternative for hikers--a trip to Chocolate Peak in the Inyos, led by local conservation group Friends of the Inyo.

An annual Friends of the Inyo favorite, this wonderful trek heads up Chocolate Mountain in the Piper Mountains Wilderness, east of Big Pine. It is a seven mile round trip with 1,500 feet of elevation gain and loss. A true island in a sea of desert, Chocolate looks out over Deep Springs, Eureka and Fish Lake valleys.

Conditions will determine footwear. If it is snowy this will be a strenuous walk but it is an out-and-back so the group can turn around anytime.

Where and When: Sunday, February 1. Meet at 8:30am at the Big Pine Campground at the junction of Highways 168 and 395.

What to Bring: Food and drink for the day, clothing for warm or cold, a pack to carry it all, and footwear appropriate to the conditions. Snowshoes may be required and are not provided. If you need them for this trip, contact Friends of the Inyo to see if there’s a spare pair.

More Information: Call 760-873-6500 or go to friendsoftheinyo.org

I'll second that. I did this hike last year with Todd & Company - it was a moderate snowshoe, and has great views for the effort. As a relative newcomer to the area, it was fine dayhike. Highly recommended.

This sounds great, MM! I might suggest it as the Sunday activity after we see Peter Croft's slide show in Saturday night.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Awesome--hope you can make it on Sunday! It would be fun to meet some folks from this forum, and it should be a gorgeous day.
