Ok guys and gals... am working on organizing a get together hike for all us SoCal type people.

I was thinking... Iron Mountain. Saturday November 1. It'll be me and my kiddos...

Anyone interested in joining in?

Hi, Do you mean the Iron Mtn. that dangles off the west end of the Mtn Baldy complex? (The Iron Mtn. that is labeled, by Robinson and others, the toughest walk-up in S. Cal?) If so, how long are you figuring on taking to get up and back down again?

I'm pretty sure I can make it on this one. At the very least, if time gets short, I can meet you guys at the trailhead before running it.

The date looks good. I'll be solo...my daughter has a soccer game. Post the details when you have them. (Also, looks like there are two possible trailheads, please clarify so we all find each other.)

Karen.. I'll post all that info and try to send out emails as well to all interested parties. I know you'll be coming from a bit of a distance.. please let me know what a good start time for you will be so I can make sure to take all into consideration...

The trailhead is at the sign on the 67 and Poway Road. If you're coming from Poway Road, the road ends at the 67. You turn right on the 67 South for about 3 seconds and turn left across the highway to get a spot. You can park across the street but you might get hit by a truck, too. If your going north on 67 it's JUST BEFORE Poway Road on your right. Big Ole trailhead sign. One of SDs most popular hikes.

I may be able to join the group as well. What time do you plan on starting?

I want to give everyone who lives a bit away plenty of time to get there without having to get up at OHMYGAWD early... so... mid to late morning start maybe? 10ish... still totally up in the air until I hear back from a couple of folks..

Time to start...

I'm an early riser. LA is about 1.5-2 hours from Poway. No biggie, whatever time you set works for me...It may be hot, not any shade, so an earlier start may be better. Your call.

Hi Chris,

Sounds like a fun hike.I've done it several times myself and might even join in if I'm in town that weekend.Just a reminder though, the parking along 67 is limited and fills in pretty early.I've hit that trail at first light on Saturday mornings and found parking no problem then when I finish between 8-9 am and the place is a zoo with no parking to be found and dashing across the 67 is not like playing Frogger.Plus.......I'm a little skiddish parking next to a highway lately......

IRON MOUNTAIN, is one of my favorite local hikes, especially during the Miramar Air Show, you can see the jets re-fueling from the air tankers WHILE IN A BANKED TURN OVER THE TRAIL!!!
And from the top of the mtn. can see the runway at Miramar. But, can't make it on the first..................steve

Thor it would be awesome if you could join in the festivities!!!!

Thanks for that reminder. Um.. children... no emergency room trips will be allowed during the SoCal Hiking event... so please watch yourselves! wink

Passinthru: If this hike is successful there will be more planned in the future... well... even if it's not I'll still be planning more...

DUG: It'll be great to hike with you again...

10ish would work for me. Main reason I ask is that I will probably be riding my bike from PCH or Hwy 15 and need to allow enough time. I might also need to stow my bike in someone's car or truck while hiking if that's possible.
