Heat feels good on the muscle but almost all back pain is neurologicly induced and the ant-inlfamatory effect of ice is WAAAAAAY more therapeutic.

Good gawd man, you sound just like my wife! Besides, the Valium feels WAY better than the heat or the ice!!! I quit taking everything except for Motrin this morning. I think I'm about 65% now.........................................DUG

Break it out and we can discuss it. There is way too much research discussing neurogenic low back pain to blame LBP on muscles. Muscle pain is usually secondary to nerve pain.

Completely agreed, although it is quite the chicken vs. the egg type of thing. Which came first: nerve irritation or mechanical irritation of a defective/degenerative tissue? My thoughts here would include, however:

1) What is serving as the trigger of the neurogenic pain (mechanical basis)?

2) Why is it sensitization of C-fibers occurs at such different rates?

I always found it most fascinating that changes occur all the way up the chain, including the horns of the spinal cord, which, as Chris mentions above, will indeed make pain 'all in your head'!

PS: And it would be a much more interesting discussion than the other blather.

Now you are getting technical let me dust of the synapses of my memory.
Current research states that the nociceptors(pain sensitive fibers) send messages to the brain via the spinal thalamic chain of the posterior horn I believe. These pain messages in turn cause the brain to send message to the muscles telling them to splint and guard, thus becoming hypertonic.(Dang do I sound smart now?)
The nociceptors are fired by noxious chemicals which are the result of poor spinal mechanics and lack of dynamic movement. I now put this topic to rest...lol
Chris and Laura you may be correct that this is a mental problem hence why the meds are working

Um, did you just say I have a mental problem? The meds are working because they make me sleep and nothing hurts when I sleep. smile....................................DUG
