But if you're carrying a whole (even if mini) roll of tape, doesn't that take up extra space and ounces (for the core)? If it's wrapped around something that you already have to carry (like your poles or a water bottle or something) doesn't that save on the weight and space?

For me, by cutting the roll in half (and I use a roll that is almost depleted) it doesn't really add much weight or take up much space. I also like to keep the DT dry although it might work just fine if wet...not sure.

Well, we're talking about the paper core of a duct tape roll, not a gold brick. If you care about it, you have successfully joined the ultralight movement. smile

BTW, if you have gold bricks that you want to shed, give me a call. I'll take them off your hands for free! eek

Oh man.. I was just fixin' to make the same offer to you!!!! Ok.. no gold bricks... whistle

However.. "every once counts".. right? So.. while I'm not -quite- at the ultralight thing I'm willing to figure out where things can be cut. Besides... to much bulk in my pack and it ends up being as wide as I am tall (granted.. thats not much anyways).. but it becomes cumbersome on the trail. So... lesser is better grin

I'm witcha; less bulk. So I place my ace bandage through the core of the DT and keep it in my emergency kit.

I've used tape from my poles years later with no problems. Then again I get the military grade stuff (free of course) so I don't know if it's any better. My thing is I use multiple packs depending on the outing. I empty them completely each time and repack for each new "death march". I really, really like my tape and I am dumb enough to forget to pack it. This way, I don't forget since I don't pack it. As an added bonus I don't have to dig it out of my pack. Just my opinion.................................DUG

As I had mentioned in an earlier post, a good one. I also like your idea of medical tape on the other pole. I am a total duct tape fan; wouldn't want to be on a mountain without it!

Just commenting on the shelf life of duct tape after years wrapped around a pole. Medical tape isn't so good after a season or so. For some reason most of my duct tape goes towards patching my hiking pants. I guess that means I should be spending more time moving on down the trail and less sitting around on rocks "resting". smile..............................DUG

Great TR SoCalGirl.Like I told you after your 1st Trip Report that you are the Erma Bombeck of the WPS board.
Remember Erma said "Life isn't a bowl of cherries. It's the pits." from her book of the same name.

Doc: I was going to try to find something Erma-ish to wear for my pics on the trail... couldn't figure it out... thus the "Life is like a bowl of cherries"... its all your fault!!! wink

MC and Dug: You guys are hilarious.. but I sooo know what you're talking about. Thankfully I haven't had to tape-patch -my- clothes.. however I've had to, on more then one occassion, use this particular trick for Boy Scout pants. Most recently on a trip to Joshua Tree...

blush Well thanks... keep an eye on the boards... we're not done yet. At least.. I'm not. Persistance pays off... I can always find a way to lighten my load (curling iron stays behind next time)... and Whitney and I have a score to settle now... wink
