Reporting on a trend that I hope will not get started here in California. We were in Colorado last week and read in the paper that a lot of 'messages' were being written on the rocks on top of Mr. Elbert (the state highpoint, 14,433) with 'Sharpy' type pens. One of the writers included his full name and e-mail address and was tried and convicted.

Wow what the heck is wrong with people?

Duh....
“I didn’t really know it was technically illegal,” Daugherty told the Summit Daily News, expressing regret for his actions. “It was my first fourteener. It was long hike. I was so happy I made it. I saw two other ones up there, and I just wanted to leave my mark. I didn’t know exactly it was wrong, and common sense-wise, I didn’t think about it.”

This is yet another reason for keeping summit logs on the summits. Give the hikers/climbers a place to scribble their names and notes so they don't add (more) graffitti to the rocks.

Humphreys Peak in AZ has an ammo box but needed more notepads or something when we were up there last week.

Have you seen the inside of the Whitney hut lately? I hadn't been in there for years until last week when we ducked in out of the storm. Nasty..............................DUG

i'm sorry that i didn't stick my head inside when i was there to see what you mean.

"nasty" ?

trash? wag bags? leftovers?

who, if anyone, cleans it?

whose responsibility is it?

...............dug, thanks.

i hate graffiti.

anyone know whose responsibility it is for removing the graffiti? - meaning, park service, mt whitney graffiti removal society?

i understand the chemicals that remove the markings carry its own issues, too... but... i hate graffiti..

or is it a hopeless cause?

This topic brings to mind a thread I started in 2005:

Graffiti at the peak

I am wondering if the letters carved in the granite are still there.

If I remember correctly (I was sorta tired for some reason) :), some of it was scratched in. Maybe my next time up (might get a 3rd summit in this year) I'll take a look to see what needs to be done to clean it up. At least it's on the inside, but that doesn't make it right. I honestly don't remember the last time I was in there - I normally like to relax and enjoy the view (hence the reason for draggin myself up there) and you can't do that sitting inside the hut. Last trip the view was whiteout for a few minutes so we went in. It's not like a NY subway station or anything, but still looks bad IMHO........................DUG

Yeah, but this was my fave:

Frankly I think the stripe of fire retardent on Feather Mountain, which was visible last weekend from Mt. Tom, is disgusting. And people who carve aspens.

Very sad - it's probably the only "recognition" people who do graffti will ever get for anything in their lifetime, other than perhaps, mug shots.

It's been several years since I was up on Mt. Elbert (actually about 4 years to the day), but when I was there, there was a summit log. Some people just don't seem to appreciate what they have just experienced and realize that it doesn't belong to just them.

Why not just settle for a picture at the top of a mountain? I've sometimes wondered why folks are so obsessed with signing registers when it seems a photograph would be the ultimate way to signifying you were there without leaving anything behind. Graffiti; that's just not right!
