leaving on Monday Sep 15 from Cottonwood Pass Trail Head. 1st night @ Chicken Spring Lake. 2nd night at Rock Creek ranger Station, 3rd night in Crabtree Meadows, 4th night at Guitar Lake, 5th night Lone Pine Lake ( or Portal eating burgers).

Pack weight is close to 35lbs including fishing pole and 5 days food. I'm just looking for any last minute tips from someone who has done this or a similiar route. Is there anything special I need? I feel pretty prepared. We'll be camping at Cottonwood Pass Trailhead on Sunday with beer and pizza. Anyone in the area, feel free to jin us.

I like stopping for the night at the sparse little tarns above Guitar Lake.

Why?
1 Far fewer people, most stop at Guitar.
2 higher up a bit, head start for summit day.
3 view of, and looking down on...The Guitar

I'm guessing that you will make it to Crabtree fairly early in the day. Might consider continuing up the extra mile or so to Guitar Lake to save you the effort the next day.

I caution people at 10,000' and going higher to save the high salt content food and alcohol until coming back. Some tummies at that altitude can't take it and both dehydrate the bod. If you feel pretty good about it and the altitude, have a blast.

I love the stuff, but its pasta, butter and decaf soda as a last meal for me.

But it is tempting to join the party smile

(umm you got anchovies on those bad boys?)

I would agree that beer prior to the hike is a marginal idea. The alcohol will definitely have a dehydrating effect, you won't sleep as well, and even a minor hangover will feel unbelievably magnified at altitude. Unless you are SURE that you don't respond this way at altitude, you might want to take some caution on this.

This is a particularly leisurely schedule, with which there is nothing wrong. However, you can certainly push the mileage a bit, and actually make the trip less complicated.

It won't take you that long to climb Cottonwood Pass, and once you've made the ridge above ChickenSpring Lake, it is all downhill to rock creek. Personally, I find the environs of the creek MUCH nicer than Chickenspring. Alternatively, continue on to lower Soldier Lake, also a more tree-laden environment. I've also had much better fishing luck on Rock Creek and Soldier Lake over the years.

If you do the Soldier Lake option, you then have a relatively short day to the Rock Creek Crossing, and you might scramble up the ridge north of the lake to see Miter Basin, one of the most beautiful areas of the Sierra, I think. You can scramble down, and follow the creek, which is Rock creek, down to the trail, and down to the PCT crossing.

I agree with pushing past Crabtree to the tarns, it makes summit day (your toughest, by far), much easier.

This is one of my favorite trips in the Sierra, and however you choose to do it, you will love it.
