dmatt is on vacation and I'm hoping to be going up Whitney in the next few days. Anyone have a good alternative to his excellent forecasts?

Zip, check the "Weather links" link in the Feature topics box above on the left. That page has links to all the related weather links we can find that apply to Mt. Whitney and the surrounding area.

sjarelkwint, the NOAA "Whitney Summit weather" link will get you a pretty close prediction, although it is for a lower elevation. Temps would be several degrees lower for the summit. And the White Mountain Summit weather station can give you actual values at White Mountain; its weather is quite similar to Whitney, only drier.

People often sleep at the summit, although altitude issues could render it a restless night. It depends on how well acclimated you are. Ear plugs would help if you sleep in the hut -- any breeze will cause the metal roof to rattle some.

have done: Half Dome - Dana - Gould - Russell - Carillon - Hale and young when we make an attempt for whitney after 2 days at Iceberg Lake ... Those 600 meter extra won't be that big deal i hope ...

If you have camped two nights at Iceberg Lake without any trouble, you will be in fine shape for a camp at the summit. On the other hand, if your nights at Iceberg are bad, or if you are feeling the altitude effects, then skip the camp on top -- just bag the peak and get off.

And if the weather on the summit is good, skip the hut and sleep out under the stars. There is no better place to enjoy the view of the night sky.

Oops. Thanks guys. I have gotten so used to dmatt's forecasts that I didn't even look around here on the site.

plan was already to sleep on top of mount dana some days before the whitney attempt so acclimatisation won't be a problem normally it just looked so cool sleeping at the highest point i have ever been at that time ...

sleeping outside would be the thing we wanne do but if storm would hit whitney during the night that hut seemed to be a great sollution for us ... Seeing the sun rise behind the mountains would be a spectacular view for us!

Zip,

I made 4 trips to White Mtn last year and 2 to Whitney as training trips for Nepal/Himalaya. The weather site I used was 100% correct. I believe there is a weather receiver up north of the store it appears on their map.

As follows: www.wrh.noaa.gov/reno

Type in the zip code 93545 in the box at the left (street, city) not the search box.

Made a trip to Whitney last week, weather 100% correct.
