Although my son Andrew has been on the Mt. Whitney Summit on other times, he has never done a 1 Day Whitney...which I promised him.

Consequently we entered the Mt. Whitney Lottery and got our 1 day permits for July 8th.

On July 7th we went for a little stroll up to Lone Pine Lake. After the long switchback, the trail switchbacks gradually up toward the eastern side of Thor Peak. We left the trail here, crossed the river and climbed the eastern rim up to Lone Pine Lake. That was kind of fun, getting to Lone Pine Lake a different way.

A few pictures are here.

The next morning, July 8th, we hiked up the Mountaineers Route to the summit and back....nothing too unusual here...we took a few pictures along the way.

My son Andrew came home with two 1 Day Mt. Whitney shirts and a Mug....and the satisfaction he completed the task. I came home tired and happy we got to experience another Whitney summit together.

Way 2 go, Andrew! I know how happy I was when I did my first 1-day ascent and got my t-shirt! I just couldn't justify it without doing it.

What a great time, and congrats Kent on another summit!

That is Rad!

How old is Andrew? I have to tell you Kash, you are an inspiration. I have 2 boys, 4 and 6. One day I hope to get them them into mountaineering, and take them on my adventures.

How old was Andrew when you started getting him into the 3rd class stuff?

Congrats on the 1 day summit...and many more

Congrats to you and Andrew!!! Just arriving to LP Lake from a different route intrigues me. The more one day MR TR's I read, the more I am inspired to try it...maybe next year...

Inspire On!

Andrew first went to Mt. Whitney when he was 9 years old, then 13, then 15, and twice this year (at 17 yrs old). Four of those trips where up the the Mountaineers Route and one was cross country from Meysan Lake.

I think the last few years he has become more comfortable with the class three stuff. Before that he would go along and we would help him... but he said it kind of scarred him.

My youngest sons, who are 13, are getting hiking and backpacking training with the scouts. In a few years, when they are old enough to carry their own stuff, they will be coming with me more. They have only been on Mt. Whitney once...when they were 9 years old, and the whole family went. http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/1221320745061435028pEDcjr

Way to go! On July 3rd this year, Whitney became my first summit attempted (and gained!, on the main trail). By the time I got home on the 4th, I was itching to do the MR! Now your report has gone and made that itch a full blown rash! Thanks for posting the great photos.

The breath within my lungs was so exhausted
from climbing, I could not go on; in fact,
as soon as I had reached that stone, I sat.
"Now you must cast aside your laziness",
my master said, "for he who rests on down
or under covers cannot come to fame;
and he who spends his life without renown
leaves such a vestige of himself on earth
as smoke bequeaths to air or foam to water.
Therefore, get up; defeat your breathlessness
with spirit that can win all battles if
the body's heaviness does not deter it.
A longer ladder still is to be climbed;
it's not enough to have left them behind;
if you have understood, now profit from it."
Then I arose and showed myself far better
equipped with breath than I had been before:
"Go on, for I am strong and confident."
We took our upward way upon the ridge,
with crags more jagged, narrow, difficult,
and much more steep than we had crossed before.

-Dante Alighieri
"The Divine Comedy"
Inferno,
Canto XXIV, Lines 43-63

I was thinking of this on my way up. Wanted to put it in the book but, well...a little long.

Happy Trails!
