I'm planning to lead a group to the summit of Langley in about 2 weeks. We'll be camping at Long Lake and head over New Army Pass on our way. I'm hoping that by that time we won't have issues with snow/cornice at the top of the pass. We are strong hikers, but have no experience with crossing snow or ice. Does anyone have any current information about trail conditions there? Any feeling about whether snow/ice should be an issue then? I'd love to go over Army Pass instead but know that snow stays there longer than on NAP.

From what I have been seeing posted and talking with friends going over, I'm guessing that by middle of July you won't have a problem. You may want to go directly up some of the rock rather than follow the usual trail (that might be covered). That is normally just a rock scramble. If you had packs it might be a bit of a nuisance and just slow down your progress. But your normal day pack for Langley shouldn't hinder you much.

I'm guessing that if you are careful, even in the worst case then you can simply follow the footprints of those before you. You will probably get wet, however.

Old Army should be clear enough by then also. If you know where the trail is (there is one) or have been there before, it helps. The snow will be at the top and again, there probably will be a bit left over, but it will have been well trampled by the time you get there.

New Army would be your choice if at all concerned or won't be able to scope out the old pass the first day out from trail head. Usually about 1.5 routine hours up Old Army from the lake. If you are strong 1/2 that.

I just pass over New Army Pass on 7/5 and the trail was dry all the way to the top.

Was also just over New Army Pass on July 5. A photo of the trail near the top is in the following post. There's also a photograph of Army Pass from last year in one of the related posts. Note that last year was a very low snow year, so can't be compared to this year. See:

Thanks for the great information. We'll be up there soon and we are looking forward to an awesome trip.
