We are a group planning to summit Mt. Langley via NAP on Sunday June 15th. We are planning to camp at Long Lake Saturday night and depart for the summit early on Sunday morning. This is the first time we have hiked in the Cottonwood Lakes area.

Our concern is getting over NAP this early in the season. Has anyone been over the pass this last weekend that can give us recent snow conditions? We are not experienced with ice tools so we were not planning on taking them.

We were expecting to have to scramble around the snow cornice at the top. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I tried to climb to the top of Langley on June 7, 2008. I got about 1.5 miles/1,500 feet from the summit and turned around. I was just too tired to make it.

The snow on new Army Pass really slowed me down. I had and ice axe and crampons but this was my first time using them. I was a little sketched out, especially coming down. I would not have been able to do it without the ice axe and crampons. I did not see an easy way to scramble around the snow.

I left Horseshow meadow around 5:15am and returned around 4:45pm. I went up South Fork and came down Cottonwood Creek, 19.5 miles. I checked out Old Army Pass and there was just way too much snow.

If I was with someone else I might have been able to make it. The combination of altitude, out of shape, and nervousness about coming down the ice kept me from the summit. I am going to do a little more training and I will be back soon. The hike was amazing, so beautiful.

Rich-

I just found this post while packing my swag in a hotel in Anaheim.

On the odd chance you see this, I (solo) am also planning to be in the area of Langley/Cottonwood lakes and would like to give the summit a shot. I am planning to arrive Saturday morning, hike to the lakes, spend Saturday night and evaluate conditions Sunday morning for a possible summit attempt.
