We're looking at a hike in the Matterhorn Peaks area of Yosemite and were wondering if anyone has been up that way lately and give us an idea of snowpack and runoff. We'll be coming in from Bridgeport through Twin Lakes and up to the crest.

Up here in Oregon our snowpack is 200 per cent of normal with solid snow above 3,000 feet and rivers and streams running at dangerous levels right now. I'm hoping that by the end of June the Sierra might be a little tamer.

Thanks!

Snow coverage in the Sierra is far below normal this year, so by the end of June, you will have no trouble heading up to Matterhorn.

Man... that brings back memories. I did a x-country hike starting at Twin Lakes, past Matterhorn (climbed the summit on day 2), then through the northern reaches of Yosemite, coming out via Mattie Lake and Glen Aulin to Tuolumne Meadows. That was all back in 1972!

Just got off the phone with the ranger at Tuolumne Meadows who said the snow is melting fast in the upper elevations of the park. Vogelsang HSC is set to open July 4th so I would imagine hikes at those elevations would be OK by the first week in July. Have a great trip! smile

Thanks for the info. In fact that reminds me of my 1971 John Muir Trail hike. Does that ever bring back memories!
