We climbed Mt. Whitney last August, and were able to get a site at the Portal campground (barely). We're climbing it again this August, and are wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to where to camp elsewhere that is at or above 8,000ft and not too far from the trailhead. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a few listed from searching online, but can't seem to find much info on them:
Horseshoe Meadow
Portagee Joe
Diaz Lake
Cottonwood Lakes
Equestrian
Golden Trout

Thanks so much!!

I'd opt for Horseshoe Meadow - it's at 10K and not too far away. Notice that you have it misspelled - if you Google it, you'll find lots of hits. Also do a search here for more info.

Thanks Kevin, for the spelling tip!! smile I spend all day on the computer and always manage to have a few of those hanging around. Thanks also for the advice on Horseshoe Meadows. I'll do more searching.

Portagee Joe is in the city limits of Lone Pine, and Diaz Lake is just south of town. Both on the valley floor, so not so good.

The other three are all within about a half mile of each other, and all about 10k feet. All are excellent, accessible, cheap, and never all filled.

Thank you for all of the good information, is it true that you can only stay a max. of 1 night at Horseshoe Meadows? You can't make reservations correct? Maybe we'll just take a chance, and hope that there's a spot towards the end of August?

Thanks again.

This thread provides good background info:

I allow about 45 minutes, but ... YMMV.

Thank you for the info...45 minutes isn't bad. I still can't find out for sure if HS Meadows still has a 1 night limit - the phone number listed online has been busy for 3 days! Do you happen to know? It is first come first serve I am assuming.

Thanks again for your help.

Lizardlvr,
Your assumption is correct. Horseshoe Meadow is one night only, no reservations - first come, first served. It's much closer than Onion Valley and gives you another 1k feet of altitude as well.

Thank you so much for the one night max. stay confirmation! We will figure out the rest once we get there. It looks like we'll be moving our camp during the weekend, but it will great great no matter what!

Thanks again.
