Dale,
    I changed my screen resolution to 800x600 and had scroll bars for the entire window. That is a browser function that allows users with low resolution monitors to view high resolution web pages. That feature has nothing to do with the display of images.

    I know of no HTML feature that provides scroll bars on individual images. The closest alternative would be to post the URLs of all the images as links and have people pull up the images one by one. That is what is done with online photo albums. What you really are asking for is a direct link to Runner33's Flikr set, but then other people would not get to see the images in the post.

Fred, you're using Internet Explorer. I tried the 800x600 using Firefox, and it doesn't give me the scrollbars. frown

An alternative with Firefox is to right click on any picture, and it gives you a "View Image" option. The browser displays only the picture, adjusted to fit within the window if it is too large. Clicking on the picture zooms in to full size, and provides scrollbars on the image. Click again to go back to the picture within the window. Click the back button brings you back to the regular programming.

Steve,

Yes, Internet Explorer gives you scroll bars but does not give you the View Image option that Firefox does. All you can do is copy an image.

So VersatileFred and SteveC

Do I have this right?

For IE there isn't a problem. The cursor at the base of the tab window works as I was asking for.

For Firefox, a right-click on the image will bring up a menu where the View Image selection will bring the image up in it's own window with scroll bars as necessary. The return arrow takes you back to the message board.

I've tried both now under XP at 1280x1024 and that's what I see.

Is that the answer except for other browsers?

I've been using only Firefox for net browsing for several years so thats what I was seeing. Firefox renders WPSMB with a horizontal cursor at the base of each post so I thought that it was the UBBthreads software we needed to figure.

So, if this is how it can work, does it get posted somehow to keep people from whining like me?

Steve

I was viewing another site on Firefox in another tab than the tab I posting this message from. It has independent scroll bars beneath each photo.

The problem is not with Firefox. Firefox can display individual scroll bars. It looks like the software that WPSMB uses is either not written to support Firefox as well as it supports IE or it is not set up to support Firefox as well as it supports IE. I don't know anything to do about it, so it is a good thing Firefox provides an alternate viewing capability

Wow, that is a nice site, especially the picture options. They have a lot of great features that we don't. I looked at the page source (Firefox right-click gives you this option) and it looks like the smart guy that built that software even has his name and copyright right in every page:
<META name="Author" content="Phil Askey">
<META name="Copyright" content="(c)1998-2007 Phil Askey, Askey.Net Consulting Ltd.">

He probably spends a lot of time maintaining/programming on the site. I wouldn't be surprised if it is his full-time job.

Unfortunately, this board runs on a shoestring budget -- we don't sell cameras or advertise anything, so this is what we get. I think it works pretty well for most people's needs.

Do you expect us to believe that WPSMB is the only website in America that isn't an investment in the hope of being purchased by Microsoft or Google or Amazon?

(dpreview was purchased by Amazon)

Ummm...no. I am sure there are quite a few that are not such "investments in hope". I for one would hate to see it gobbled up by some big corporation. But it is Doug's board, not mine -- he pays the bills. And I somehow get the feeling he wouldn't be interested in an offer from MS or any other company either. ...at least I hope not.

I really like this community of outdoor enthusiasts. It feels like a great bunch of friends. Fortunately, we don't represent a big market to be exploited, so I don't think Doug will be getting any major offers. smile

a while to look back on it, i left trail camp at 1200, i had started from the lake near ~2 miles from the trail head that morning. looking back i think the reason why it took me so long for a relatively short distance was acclimation, if i had it to do over again, and a little more time i'd have spent the afternoon at trailcamp and left from there the next morning, let my body get used to the altitude.
