I have received my REI dividend and will use it to help buy a GPS unit, which I hope to put to the test in a Langley-Whitney trip this September.
I understand some GPS units may be more Mac friendly than others. Does anyone have any suggestions?
As always, thanks for any and all responses from this Board.

Hi,
Sorry to disappoint you, but I've been a Mac user since they came out and have both Garmin and Magellan GPS units and both are abysmal in their Mac support. Garmin has made noises like they plan on offering GPS support, but so far, I've had to build a windows partition on my laptop hard drive to use their software and updates. No luck at all with Magellan. All the updates I've loaded had to be done under Windows.

Topo brand map software from National Geographic works on the Mac, but it is really challenging to get the software to talk to the GPS. Sometimes I can get it to work, other times, not.

I will say that I was able to buy a great set of maps from Garmin that cover all of the Western National Parks and adjacent wilderness areas for our hike of the High Sierra Trail last summer. I was able to put in waypoints for bear boxes, trail junctions, etc. and it worked well. Too bad I had to do it in Windows.

Newer Mac Computers will run Windows.

In any event, what you need will be on the IPhone and IPod Touch within 12 months. Count on it.
