I am planning a winter trip to Whitney.
I am coming from out of state and would prefer not to rent a car just to park it by the trailhead (or however close I can get) for several days.
Is there any way one can get from LAX (or maybe Las Vegas) using public transportation to Lone Pine and back?

Have you checked the links in Using bus, train, and shuttle service? There is public transportation to Lone Pine available in the summer, but you have to make several connections. You can check to see if they operate in winter.

I am a local climber who lives 73 miles south of Lone Pine and a couple hours drive from LAX. I'd pick u up for a nominal fee (gas + ???)

What are the dates of your trip and/or arrival/departure?

Hi Not often reported a bus travels from Reno Airport to Bishop 4 times a week and local bus from Bishop every Day to Lone Pine not fast and may need to spend a night in Bishop or better yet stopover in Mammoth and check that out as a side trip, from Lone Pine to the Portal stop in the Chamber and ask for names that do trips to the Portal.

Transit Co in Inyo Mono County just changed name it is now ESTA not sure if they have a web site try Mammoths Lakes or either Inyo county or Mono county sites. Thanks Doug

Phone 760 872 1901 ask about the Crest route Or check Inyo County website for fares and times

As always, thanks for the information.
I am grateful for the responses and information I can get from this Board.
I am actually hoping to take a winter mountaineering course with SMI March 13-17.
I appreciate the offer regarding a ride. Not sure about flights etc., or even if I can work this trip out with work and all. If it is ok, in case I am able to do this course, I'll email you off Board as the time gets closer to see if we can work it out.
Thanks,
Hans
